Our Story

Hello we are Phillip & Jane Sheard and we moved to Litton in August 2014 after living in Surrey for over 10 years and opened Park Bottom to guests a week later.

Both of us are from West Yorkshire originally and have always loved the outdoors and especially the Yorkshire Dales; as it’s a great place to run, cycle or hike. Both were competitive runners and I have represented England on a few occasions. Phillip started out as a cyclist and competed at the Commonwealth Games in 1986 before moving more towards running and fell running in particular. We both do still run and I have been known to occasionally compete at local fell races; although the B&B does limit this.

Before Park Bottom we lived in a semi-rural location in Chobham on the edge of Woking in Surrey and both had small commutes to work. Phillip as an Environmental Health Officer for Runnymede Borough Council and I as a HR Systems Analyst at Royal Holloway University. We had thought about moving to the countryside and of course to come back to Yorkshire (who wouldn’t want to?) to run a B&B for a few years; especially as Phillip had trained as a Chef when he was younger. We finally took the plunge in 2014 when Phillip was offered the chance to take redundancy from the council. We looked at a number of B&B’s in the Yorkshire Dales but as soon as we saw Park Bottom and Litton we knew this was the one for us.

Park Bottom was built in the late 1970s and the B&B side added on in the early 1980s. Originally it was a guest house serving evening meals and a tea room. In January 2015 we completely renovated and modernised Park Bottom and added the utility building to house our biomass boiler which makes a good secure bike store and drying room.
