Tomorrow, 12th August, Hampshire’s skies are set to put on quite a show ✨

A partial solar eclipse will appear in the evening, followed by the Perseid meteor shower reaching its peak overnight. Surrounded by countryside, with little nearby light pollution, The Cart House is a lovely place to settle in and look up.
Weather permitting, of course, and remember to use proper eclipse glasses when viewing the Sun.

Just 25 minutes from The Cart House, Portsmouth is a brilliant day by the water. From the historic dockyard to the shops on the marina, there is plenty to fill a day by the sea. 🌊

August is looking a little brighter 🌻

Silkstead Sunflowers () is returning to Four Dells Farm near Otterbourne for its 2026 season, with 10 acres of sunflowers to explore. Wander the trail, find your way through the maze, climb the viewing tower and choose three stems to take home, all included with entry. There is also a picnic area, homemade cakes and local ice cream, with no advance booking required.

The exact opening date will depend on how the flowers develop, so check Silkstead’s latest update before travelling. A lovely summer outing from The Cart House, and one to save for August.

Packing for a Hampshire summer is mostly a matter of sun cream and a good book. Here’s our list for a stay at The Cart House, with everything you need for the garden, the Downs and a day by the sea.

The school holidays are here, which means a good few weeks to fill! Fortunately, some of Hampshire's best family outings are close by.

Here are four we would recommend:

🎡 Paultons Park, home of Peppa Pig World and the UK's number one family theme park, around 30 minutes away. Wonderful for younger children, with bigger rides for older ones, and a new Viking-themed area for 2026.

🚢 Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, around 35 minutes. Step aboard historic warships, meet the Tudor Mary Rose and HMS Warrior, and see HMS Victory being restored up close. One ticket lasts a full year.

🧬 Wi******er Science Centre, around 20 minutes. Two floors of hands-on exhibits, live science shows and one of the largest planetariums in the UK, with three new outdoor exhibits opening on 18 July.

🚜 Manor Farm Country Park, your closest at around 15 minutes. A working farm of a bygone age set in 400 acres on the banks of the River Hamble, with friendly animals, a Victorian schoolroom and play barns.
