Distant Hills Guest House Stylish guest house with hot tub in the Scottish Highlands just north of Fort William and Ben Nevis

We offer so much more than just a great night’s sleep & a hearty Scottish breakfast, we also have a fabulous outdoor hot tub, a residents’ bar with local craft beers, gins & whiskies, and 2 e-bikes available for guest hire! We love to share our knowledge & passion for the area & can give you some great suggestions. Our final walk of the week: Biod an Fhithich in Glen Shiel, a real Distant Hills favourite. Mostly dry with sunny spells, and fantastic views of the Forcan Ridge, Loch Duich and Eilean Donan Castle in the distance. Cows, deer and wild goats too!

Thank you to Cal, guiding for us for the first time, and to everyone for the great energy and banter. Then home for scones, jam and clotted cream, and a last dinner at The Old Station Restaurant. A superb week with superb people.

Binnein Shuas today: a small hill full of Highland character. An easy track to Lochan na h-Earba, then wet, rough ground beneath the famous Ardverikie Wall and a steep, hard climb to the top. 12.4 km and 563 m of ascent with our guide Dave.

Squalls had us huddled together on the summit, then the cloud lifted for views over Loch Laggan to the Grey Corries. A long, tough descent through beautiful autumn colours, and a group buoyed by a real sense of achievement. Everyone dug deep. Brilliant effort!

Week 2, Walk 2: four seasons under the North Face of Ben Nevis! 🌦️

Dave led the group up beside the Allt a' Mhuilinn to the CIC Hut, with the river in full spate, dark, moody cliffs towering overhead and autumn views back towards Fort William and Corpach. Lunch was cut short by sideways hail and wind, but everyone loved it. As Marjory put it: "A great day with 4 seasons - thank you Dave."

Week 2, Walk 1: our Moderate Walking group are off! 🍂

We started the week at Creag Meagaidh National Nature Reserve, following the path up through golden birch woods to Lochan a' Choire, tucked beneath the great cliffs of Coire Àrdair. Cloud on the tops, autumn colour everywhere, and one brave soul even went for a swim!

Day 4: the long walk home! 🚂🥾

For the final walking day of the week we swapped summits for a journey. The 07:57 train from Spean Bridge took us out to Corrour, the remote, road-less station on the edge of Rannoch Moor, and then we walked all the way back to Distant Hills.

The route took us across the moor, down to the head of Loch Treig and north through the Lairig Leacach, the old pass beneath the Grey Corries, before the final miles home to Spean Bridge.

It was a new one even for our guide Dave, and it delivered: very wet underfoot, plenty of river crossings, mostly nice conditions with a few showers burling through, and some awesome wild country along the way. We even met a dragonfly.

Day 3: a Distant Hills first! ⛰️

For the first time on one of our walking holidays, we took on part of the iconic Ring of Steall: Sgùrr a' Mhaim (1,099m), our third Munro of the week, then the airy Devil's Ridge across to Sgùrr an Iubhair (1,001m).

It was a tough, steep three-hour climb to start on a fresh autumn morning, but the hard work was rewarded with amazing views, Brocken Spectres and the first snow of the season on Ben Nevis. Then came an epic traverse of the Devil's Ridge, with a few short sections of straightforward scrambling. For some of the group it was their very first ridge walk, and what a confidence boost and sense of achievement.

Lunch was by the lochan in Coire nam Mìseach, before heading back down the Coire a' Mhusgain path. The weather gods played ball too: dry until the very last stretch. All expertly guided by our good friend Dave Lamond.

Then home for a cup of tea, a slice of Dani's lime and coconut cake and a soak in the hot tub. Three walking days down, one to go!

Day 2: two Munros and a whole lot of sky! ☀️⛰️

After yesterday's wet feet in Glen Nevis, we headed west to Loch Quoich for Gleouraich (1,035m) and Spidean Mialach (996m), a pair of fine, rocky Munros joined by a cracking high-level ridge.

The old stalkers' path on Gleouraich made for a brilliant climb, with Loch Quoich stretching out below us and the hills of Knoydart beyond. The forecast promised a bit of everything, and we had the odd shower drifting past and even a rainbow, but mostly it was sunshine, big skies and views in every direction.

Our autumn walking holidays are off and running! 🍂🥾

The first walking week of the season started today in Glen Nevis. We followed the rocky path through the Nevis Gorge with the Water of Nevis thundering alongside, then out into the meadows below Steall Falls, which was in full flow after the rain.

From there we climbed beside the Allt Coire Giubhsachan and up onto Meall Cumhann (698m), a cracking wee hill with big views back down the glen and across to the Mamores.

Wet underfoot? Definitely. But the weather was kind to us, the cloud kept lifting off the tops and the autumn colours are really starting to glow.
