After Squeak laid her first egg - a proper home-reared beauty - a homemade farmhouse breakfast was needed!

Fresh picked Horse mushrooms from outside our sun lounge, Squeak’s first egg (the white one) and a fresh egg from our new hens at Cuplshills.

The mushrooms were sauted in a butter, garlic, salt, black pepper - and a little cream.

Lidl’s finest malted bloomer and Warburtons crumpets.

The eggs were delicious, soft, bright yellow runny yolks.

The taste? There was no apparent difference in taste between the duck and hens egg.

A perfect start to a day on the farm. Hopefully Squeak will continue to lay! 🥚🍳🥚🍳🥚

The duck with no name! That’s one of our two ducks on film at Cuplahills - the newbie is Squeek!

Stephen has been out seeing the ducks and gathering an egg from Squeek to enjoy with his breakfast.

No prizes - but any suggestions for a name for Squeek’s older pal - just drop us a message!

New Hens!

25 new point of lay Hyline hens.

They’ve been on the farm for 4 weeks growing to the point of lay. They’ve just started laying so we moved them from the barn out to get their first experience of free range life and they joined our old girls.

Wings were carefully clipped first to stop them flying out.

And now we’ll enjoy the results 🥚🍳🥚🍳🥚

Sheep work!

The lambs have recently been weaned from their mother.

Stephen explains what’s been happening on the farm: “We dosed all the ewes and lambs for worms, trimmed and hooves that were overgrown and ran them all through our new footbath to reduce the risk of footrot.”

Stephen says: “We made a new race to make the handling of the small flock a little easier. It might not be perfect, but it’s an improvement.”

Donald and Clayton were on hand to assist.

The old ladies knew where they were heading to winter pastures at the back of the farm!

Peas harvested in 2026 and Stephen explains more …

“My first attempt at combining peas, after having moved winter beans around the farm for the last 3 years. Peas are a break crop in the rotation and they are also a legume meaning that they produce their own nitrogen from the atmosphere, making them a low cost input crop.”

He adds: “Amazingly, the peas are being harvested at between 12% and 13% moisture, meaning we will save a week’s worth of time not having to dry them and there will be no gas requirements, important in a year with tight margins.”

On the yield? “It is currently looking at a little over 3t/ha, which is ok, but production has definitely been affected by the very dry weather.”

We hope you like the video and photos showing how it was done.

Such joy from simple pleasures … the natural harvest across the fields and hedgerows on the farm.

Stephen describes the damson bushes laiden with so many fruits “the bows are breaking”.

“Apples, rowan berries, hazelnuts and our wild bird seed & flower mixes” adding: “The dogs love hoovering up the fallen damsons up the Cuplahills archway.”

And the final photo?

A beautiful autumn wildflower bouquet: “We picked these to make button holes for Freddie and I for Mum’s wedding today.”

Very special.

Wheat harvest 2026 safely cut and stored. Here’s Stephen with an update …

“Remarkably, most of the crop was harvested at 13-14% moisture. That has never happened at Cuplahills before and demonstrates just how much our climate has changed.

The dry crop offers a much-needed opportunity to save time and money using the grain drier to dry the grain to below 15% moisture.

The crop seemed to yield pretty well, the sample looked good. Around 1/3rd of the crop is already sold at £205/t.

With war disruption in Ukraine and Russia and a major El Nino expected to affect large parts of the world’s climate this year, there is a good chance wheat prices will rise.

Next job will see the wheat stubble cultivated and a green cover crop established to soak up nutrients, put roots in the soil over winter and provide a cover for wildlife.”

Why not come and stay at the farm? Enjoy a break in our luxury lodges and explore all that’s on offer around Cuplahills and this stunning corner of Scotland.
