Artist of The Month // May ☀️

Rowena Scotney

I am an artist living in Gulval, constantly inspired by nature and the landscapes surrounding me. I was born and grew up in Cornwall, and after much travelling returned here, where my son has grown up too.

Literature, poetry, nature and art have always been close to my heart, and after working as an English teacher in schools and college for over 20 years I am now very happy to focus on art, my own practice and workshops. I run Intuitive Painting and Wellbeing workshops for women locally and internationally online, and Creativity & Wonder workshops for students educated outside of the mainstream.

I spent many years felting and selling artwork in galleries and exhibitions, and then a few years ago decided to show my oil paintings and these have now become my focus and joy! – I still love to use wools to sketch with, such as the Jackdaws series (& many other birds, animals and insects).

I am self-taught in all areas and am constantly inspired by everything around me. Many pieces are also inspired by poetry.

I sell my artwork in local galleries, exhibitions and online, and have taken part in many joint and solo shows.

Artist of the Month // April
Andrew Beard

Ever since childhood, Andrew has enjoyed drawing and sketching. This led him to an enjoyable and rewarding career as an architect and urban planner. After retirement he undertook a summer school in printmaking at Falmouth School of Art and became fascinated with the intaglio etching and aquatint processes.

Although it is a complex technique that frequently goes wrong, he finds it an absorbing medium that combines his artistic creativity with endless technical challenges! Etching copper plates in acid has been used as a method of reproducing drawings for over 400 years, and it is still used to create beautiful works of art. It is essentially the same process that Rembrandt employed in the early 17th century.

Andrew developed his printmaking skills at the studio of John Howard in Penryn and has produced some 60 etching/aquatints over the last decade. His work depicts interesting places and landscapes, mostly in west Cornwall, Derbyshire, Sweden and St Kilda. His prints aim to explore familiar locations from unusual and striking viewpoints. They have been exhibited at Royal West of England Academy, Woolwich International Print Fair, Penwith Society of Artists, and in Penzance at PZ Sudio, Penlee House Museum the Jupiter Gallery.

This exhibition comprises images from the mining heritage of west Cornwall. Several depict the remnants of major complexes of mine buildings that once dominated the landscape. They are vivid reminder of the industries that created the County as we know it. Romantic now, but once dangerous and polluting
