The 1851 Barham Workhouse Riot: The Forgotten Revolt of Starving Suffolk Labourers
In 1851, the Barham workhouse became the flashpoint for a violent, desperate rebellion. As the local agricultural economy collapsed, proud Suffolk labourers were laid off in droves, leaving them with no choice but to enter the dreaded union workhouse.
