The Emsley B&B

The Emsley B&B This a brilliant little owner-operated B&B five minutes from the center of Stratford upon Avon. It is now permanently closed.

The Emsley is a three story Victorian mid-terrace B&B in the historic town of Stratford upon Avon. She is at #4 Arden str and was built in the 1860's at the same time as No.s 2, 3, 5, 6 & 7 Arden street. This Victorian lady was once accommodation for nurses who worked at the hospital across the road. Like her sister buildings on either side, her street face is protected by a conservation order bec

ause her features are so typical of her age, but now less common. We're Chris and Liz Salt, originally from New Zealand, and now her proud new owners. We've been in the accommodation business for many years love being in The Emsley. We have plans to make her more comfortable and modernise her facilities for guests while keeping her respecting her Victorian High Gothic heritage. This is the story of our and her journey together.

Well, it's confession time. We've sold The Emsley. She has officially closed her doors, after decades of providing faithful service to tourists and locals alike. From her first steps as a terrace development by Mr Greene of Birmingham in the 1860's, this grand old, 'High Gothic' Victorian lady has welcome thousands. She's been a private home, nurse's bedsit for the hospital across the road (now the Double Tree Hilton hotel) & finally a B&B. History has come full circle; in April she returns to her roots as a family home. She's served us well & we will miss her, but we're off to pastures new....

This is what I love about England. What other country would use these words to describe their crisps; 'Gloriously unadorned but for a casual dusting of sea salt'? Elevates the English language to an artform.

Bat alert!!
Our handyman spotted this clinging high up in a sheltered spot on our wall. 'It's a bat!', he cried. 'Oh no!', squealed friends, 'You're in real trouble, bats are So protected here'. But fear not, Dear Reader. It was just a dead snail that had died and gone to Snail Heaven many moons ago. But it sure fooled us for a few days!

Oh, the joys of Victorian 'High Gothic' architecture!!! Two stories up and replacing the original 1860's - and incredibly heavy - metal downpipes. Grateful for a calm & sunny day.

We all know that staying at a B&B can be ... interesting. How good are we? Our latest review is below and came in an hour ago..
"Outstanding service. The best welcome I ever had. Absolutely lovely couple couldn’t fault them [us, ie Chris & Liz] sad that I couldn’t stay due to emergency but my friends stayed and the room was exceptional for the price and the location was fantastic! Such a warm welcome on arrival I will definitely be booking again for me and my partner!! Could not of asked for a better experience! I would recommend to anyone who asked and I hope they enjoy it as much as we did totally amazing Although I didn’t actually stay for breakfast the pictured my friends sent looked amazing and I can’t wait to come back and try for myself!"
