The Forest of Arden has come to Stratford for the autumn 🍂

As You Like It is now playing at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre until Saturday 7 November, and it’s a lovely one for a cosy autumn evening. Jonathan Groff makes his RSC debut as Rosalind, who is banished from court and escapes to the forest in disguise. There Orlando, who adores her, ends up taking love lessons from her without ever realising who she is. Expect plenty of wit, songs and a happy ending.

If you’re staying with us, the evening takes care of itself. A gentle stroll over the footbridge and along the river brings you to the theatre. When the curtain comes down you’re back in under ten minutes, with time for a nightcap in The Bear before bed. There’s no train to catch and no car park to find.

If one evening isn’t quite enough, Middlemarch is playing next door in the Swan Theatre. Our Sonnet: Autumn Escape gives you 20% off a two-night stay, so you can see both.

You can book theatre tickets at rsc.org.uk and your room direct with us at swansnesthotel.co.uk. We’d love to welcome you.

The clocks haven’t gone back yet, but the giant marshmallow is back at Coffee Clouds, and in Stratford-upon-Avon that’s how you know autumn has properly arrived.

Thick hot chocolate, a cloud of whipped cream, and a marshmallow toasted on top until it’s somewhere between golden and dangerously molten. You’ll need a spoon. And possibly a napkin.

Coffee Clouds is tucked down Shrieves Walk, the little passage off Sheep Street, a couple of doors from Tudor World. From our front door it’s a short walk: over Clopton Bridge, up Bridge Street, and right into Sheep Street. Close enough that you can still feel the warmth in your hands by the time you’re back by the river.

It’s dog friendly too, so bring the four-legged member of the party in out of the cold.

Our tip: go on a Sunday morning before the town gets busy, then take the long way back along the River Avon past the RSC.

Stratford on a Tuesday in autumn is a different town.

The coaches have thinned out. The café you walked past in August has a free table by the window. The riverside path down to Holy Trinity is quiet enough to hear the leaves underfoot, and the swans have the Avon mostly to themselves.

The theatre doesn’t take the week off either. The RSC plays most evenings, so a midweek stay still gets you a seat for As You Like It when it arrives in October.

A few reasons to make it Sunday to Tuesday rather than Friday to Sunday:

🍂 Fewer people at the Shakespeare houses
🍂 Lunch without booking three weeks ahead
🍂 The river at its quietest, first thing and at dusk
🍂 Everything still within walking distance of our front door

Our Avon Escape takes 20% off when you stay two nights or more, with breakfast included. Sunday and Monday, Monday and Tuesday, whichever suits you.

The autumn season is underway at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, and As You Like It joins the line-up in October 🎭

Three theatres sit within a five minute walk of our front door. Leave the car in our car park, walk over in the evening light, and walk back along the river afterwards. No parking to hunt for at either end of the night, and no drive home when it finishes late.

Schedules change through the season, so it’s worth checking what’s on before you book.

Our team spent this morning in a dragon boat on the Avon.

Swan Of A Kind took to the water for The Shakespeare Hospice, alongside other crews at Stratford-upon-Avon Boat Club.

Thank you to everyone who came down to shout at us from the bank, and to the Hospice for putting the day on.

The river is a two minute walk from our front door, which is how most of us ended up volunteering in the first place.

We asked Elena where she goes for a coffee when she isn’t here with us, and she didn’t have to think about it for long. It’s Brucester’s, a little independent place on Wood Street, and it’s an easy enough walk from our front door, over the bridge and straight on up Bridge Street.

It isn’t a big place, but that’s rather the point of it. They take their time over the coffee, and if you’re the sort who likes to know what you’re drinking, they’ll be more than happy to tell you.

Do bear in mind they’re closed on Mondays, so it’s one to save for the rest of the week.

And if you’re staying with us and you’d like a few more suggestions, just ask at reception. Between us we know most places in town.

The Sonnet: Autumn Escape is ready to book 🍂

Two nights with us, twenty per cent off, and breakfast each morning. You will go home with a seasonal sonnet printed on a souvenir scroll, and a quill of your own to keep 🦢

Autumn rather suits Stratford. The river settles, the trees along the towpath begin to turn, and the theatre season starts again.

Two nights rather than one, so there is time to enjoy all of it properly.

It is National Read a Book Day, and this does feel like the right town for it.

Rest & Read is a night with us, two mystery books wrapped and waiting in your room, a sleep package to help you settle, breakfast in the morning, and a twelve o’clock checkout so there is no rush to finish your chapter.

If you would rather read outdoors, a few of the places we love:

⛪️ the churchyard at Holy Trinity, which stays peaceful even in season
🦢 the riverbank below the theatre, early in the morning

You will find the full details on our website.

There is racing at Stratford this Saturday, and the twilight meetings are always a lovely one to go to. The gates open at 2.05pm, the first race is at 4.05pm, and the later ones run on into the evening light.

Our Racing & Relaxation Escape takes care of everything around it. Bed and breakfast, your race day tickets, an early check in so there is time to get ready properly, and a later checkout on the Sunday morning.

The course is 5 minutes from us by car.

National Dog Day, and here is a face that knows exactly where it has landed 🐶

Stratford is a genuinely easy town for a dog. Out of the door at Bridge Foot, over Clopton Bridge, and the whole riverside opens up. Bancroft Gardens and the narrowboats, the Recreation Ground on the far bank, then the towpath along the River Avon towards Holy Trinity Church. If that is not enough, the Stratford Greenway carries on out of town for a proper morning of it, and most of the pubs in the centre will find a water bowl without being asked.

We keep a number of dog friendly rooms here at the Swan’s Nest, with a ball and a bone waiting at check in. Book direct and tell us about the dog, those rooms are limited.
