There is racing at Stratford this Saturday, and the twilight meetings are always a lovely one to go to. The gates open at 2.05pm, the first race is at 4.05pm, and the later ones run on into the evening light.

Our Racing & Relaxation Escape takes care of everything around it. Bed and breakfast, your race day tickets, an early check in so there is time to get ready properly, and a later checkout on the Sunday morning.

National Dog Day, and here is a face that knows exactly where it has landed 🐶

Stratford is a genuinely easy town for a dog. Out of the door at Bridge Foot, over Clopton Bridge, and the whole riverside opens up. Bancroft Gardens and the narrowboats, the Recreation Ground on the far bank, then the towpath along the River Avon towards Holy Trinity Church. If that is not enough, the Stratford Greenway carries on out of town for a proper morning of it, and most of the pubs in the centre will find a water bowl without being asked.

We keep a number of dog friendly rooms here at the Swan’s Nest, with a ball and a bone waiting at check in. Book direct and tell us about the dog, those rooms are limited.

Racing returns to Stratford Racecourse on Saturday 5 September. It is a twilight meeting, so gates open at 2:05pm and the first race is at 4:05pm, which makes it an afternoon that runs into the evening rather than one that finishes mid afternoon.

The course sits on Luddington Road, about a mile and a half from the hotel. Roughly five minutes by car, or half an hour on foot along the river if the weather holds.

Jump racing has run at Stratford since 1755. The water jump sits in front of the stands, which is why most people end up leaning on the rail rather than sitting down.

Afterwards, the town is a ten minute walk from your room. The Royal Shakespeare Theatre is eight minutes, Bancroft Gardens five, Shakespeare’s Birthplace twelve.

Three more fixtures after this one will take place, Monday 5 October, Saturday 17 October and Thursday 29 October, which closes the season.

The Stratford Butterfly Farm is on Swan’s Nest Lane, which is the road the hotel sits on. No car, no park and ride, no working out where to leave the car.

It is the largest butterfly farm in the UK. Inside the tropical glasshouse there are hundreds of free-flying butterflies, and beyond that Insect City and Arachnoland for anyone in the family brave enough. Most people spend about an hour and a half there.

Then it is a two minute walk back across Tramway Walk to the hotel, over the river, past the boats.
