You don’t have to do every day of your Highland holiday by car...

The Kyle Line runs between Kyle of Lochalsh and Inverness, passing Loch Carron, mountains and stretches of moorland along the way, and the full journey takes around two hours and 40 minutes. You could leave the driving behind for the day, watch everything from the train instead and spend some time in Inverness before heading back.

If you’ve spent a few days navigating single-track roads, somebody in the group might be particularly happy to hear this suggestion 😂

If you’re heading south towards Glenelg, you can visit two remarkably well-preserved Iron Age structures that are still standing more than 2,000 years after they were built.

Dun Telve and Dun Troddan sit around 500 metres apart, so you can visit both together and get right up close to the stonework. Dun Telve has the easier walk in along a mostly flat gravel path, while Dun Troddan involves a short climb up the hillside.

They’re open all year, there’s no admission charge, and there are small parking areas beside each site.

Strome Wood is only a short distance from Kishorn and a good one to know about if you want to get out for a walk without committing to a mountain.

The community woodland has trails overlooking Loch Carron and Strome Castle, along with picnic tables if you want to bring something with you and stop for a while. Keep an eye on the shoreline below while you’re walking too, as seals are regularly spotted on the rocks.

There’s also a viewpoint where you can pull in if you’re passing and don’t have time for the full walk.

You’ve got a decent chance of spotting deer while you’re travelling around the Highlands, but if you’d like a closer look, head over to the deer enclosure at Torridon.

The National Trust for Scotland has kept deer on the farm here for around 50 years, giving visitors the chance to see them throughout the different stages of the year. There’s a small deer museum alongside the enclosure with antlers, old photographs and information about red deer, and when a ranger is around, you may even get the chance to feed them with specialist pellets.

The Torridon estate itself is free to visit and open all year.

If you’re passing through Kyle of Lochalsh, there’s a little museum tucked inside the original railway station that’s worth popping into.

Kyle Station Museum covers the history of the Kyle Line, the harbour and the local fishing industry, with old photographs, archive films, railway memorabilia and model trains and boats. It’s not a huge museum either, with around 30–45 minutes recommended for a visit, so it’s easy to add onto a day around Kyle rather than making it the whole plan.

Children aged 16 and under can visit for free too!

If you fancy a day out where you don’t really need much of a plan, have a look at Balmacara Estate.

There are 17 miles of walking trails across the estate, with shorter circular routes as well as longer walks, and you’ll pass through woodland, crofting land and along the coast depending on which route you choose. Balmacara Square is a handy place to start too, with parking, a café, shops and the Steadings Gallery all together.

The estate is open all year, and it’s free to visit, so it’s an easy one to keep in mind while you’re staying at Onnela.
