This September, we're doing something a little different at Barony Mill.

We’ve been talking to a group of Orkney artists, and the result is Old Grain. New Eyes - an exhibition of paintings, textiles, stone carving, pottery and more, all inspired by the Mill, bere and milling.

It’s the first exhibition of its kind at Barony Mill, and it will only be here for September.

Free exhibition entry: 9am – 11am daily

Or make a visit of it with a guided Mill Tour from 11am - 3.30pm. You’ll see the exhibition as part of your visit, along with the working mill itself. Standard tour admission applies.

If you’ve been meaning to visit the Mill, this is a particularly good excuse - and if you’ve been before, you’ll see it rather differently this time.

Find out more and book a tour at baronymill.com

No beremeal was harmed in the making of the exhibition.

Today was a firing day, one of those slow, watchful days where nothing can be rushed.

The kiln fire was kept alive with bere husks, fed steadily hour by hour. Up in the kiln, where the bere lay spread across the floor, a different world - thick with warmth and smoke.

Throughout the day, the work follows a rhythm:
tend the fire,
climb the stairs,
turn the bere by hand,
back down the stairs again.

It's hot. It's smoky. It takes patience, experience, and attention - because drying bere isn't just about heat, but about knowing when and how much.
