From our sawmill in the Stroud Valleys, we stock a carefully selected range of locally sourced timber, including oak, ash, beech, and some striking black walnut.

Each board is unique, shaped by its own grain, texture, and history.

Samples of current stock can be viewed on the website (on the saw mill page, sometimes it can be slow to load as it tells you what’s in stock in real time). You can also book a visit to see Jack the Miller.

She’s gnarly, bent double, defying gravity. Her witchy fingers (branches) reach out at impossible angles, clawing at the sky.

Sometime, decades ago, the wind gave her the stoop.

We call her The Witch.

She is one of the veterans in Voltaire’s Wood.

Now Available - Straight from our saw mill and ready for collection: English Ash Maker Boards.

These are dimensioned blanks prepared for immediate use in the workshop. All boards are sourced from our managed woodland in Gloucestershire, milled on-site, and air-dried for stability.

These boards are planed on both faces. They are suitable for shelving, cheeseboards, custom signage, and small furniture projects like stools or side tables. For larger surfaces like countertops, these boards are sized for easy jointing.

Harbingers of spring

One of the first flowers to bloom in spring is the primrose, flowering in glades, it provides nectar for brimstone and small tortoiseshell butterflies. The young flowers and leaves are edible but can cause allergic reactions so we’d rather leave ours for the wildlife. Did you know that people used to plant them at the front door to protect the home from faeries and evil spirits?
