Bilbao to Girona: An Unexpected Journey

🚴‍♂️ Days 3–5: Out of the frying pan into the fire

From Arnedo to Zaragoza and on to Lleida—this stretch felt like a completely different world.

Through the eerie beauty of Bardenas Reale-scene of many a sci film or Spaghetti Western then into the Spain that got left behind... Dusty tracks, abandoned petrol stations, crumbling hotels, and villages that looked like they’d been frozen in time. Windows empty. Doors hanging. Silence everywhere except tge odd mega truck avoiding the new motorway

Was it worth leaving the lush green north for this detour just to see this famous desert?

Honestly… still not sure.

🚴‍♂️ Bilbao to Girona: An unexpected journey

Days 1–2: Bilbao baggings

Touched down in Bilbao early morning after the ferry from Portsmouth—lack of kip and painful passport process then straight from sea legs to cycling legs. No easing in here…

Day 1 took us 100km through the rolling Basque countryside to Vitoria-Gasteiz. A proper introduction: lovely long climbs, lush green views, very few cars...perfect

Day 2 cranked it up to 120km heading for Arnedo—with loads of Vía Verde riding. Old railway lines turned cycle paths = smooth miles… but those tunnels 😳 long, dark, and just a little bit sketchy for those who are a tad claustrophobic

Two days in: legs warming up, journeyfully underway.

🚴‍♀️ The 2026 Lloyds Tour of Britain Women is heading to Wales for two exciting stages this August!

⛰️ Stage 3: Mold ➡️ The Great Orme, Llandudno
🌄 Stage 4: Llanidloes ➡️ Hay-on-Wye

Mold will host a Tour stage start for the first time, while Llanidloes and Hay-on-Wye will also make their debuts as start and finish hosts. The riders will face a spectacular uphill finale on the Great Orme before racing through the stunning roads of Mid Wales the following day.

Get ready to welcome the world’s best riders to Wales on Friday 21 and Saturday 22 August. 🙌
