The stallions will begin being turned out for the next six weeks.

The chosen stallions have to go through a rigorous grading system to be awarded the right to be turned out.
This is to be sure of a continued strong bloodline and conformation of the New Forest pony.

It is not easy for most commoners to keep a stallion on their small holdings, but the stallion scheme allows the registered stallions to live out on one large pasture together during the year, giving the commoners more of an opportunity to keep them.

The past couple of weeks the mares would have started to wander further from their usual haunts in search of a stallion as they come into season, and foal-proud mares will keep out of the way of the stallion. Although it isn't unheard of that the younger, stronger mares who have just given birth in the past couple of weeks to quickly be back in foal.

You will have good warning that a stallion is nearby as you will typically see large herds of ponies and there is often a lot of squealing and foot stamping, but please give them plenty of space, you do not want to get caught up amongst this volatile situation, and be aware when driving, cycling, walking or horseriding that the ponies are more flighty and defensive this time of year. So enjoy this spectacular sight from a distance 🙏
