Webber's Post | Mist in the pines, bracken going over.

Straight pine trunks fading back into the fog, ivy climbing the nearest ones, and a single young beech holding its gold in the middle of it all. The bracken underfoot has already turned rust and copper.

Webber's Post sits above Horner with the car park right on the edge of the woods, so this is one of the easiest places on Exmoor to walk into proper woodland. The paths drop down into Horner combe or climb towards Dunkery.

Is a misty morning your kind of walking weather, or would you wait for the sun?

Gamekeeper's Cottage, Martinhoe | Sea and valley from the hillside. 🌊

A two-storey cottage set into the hillside above the Heddon Valley, one of only three in a big character building. 🏑 Sea views one way, wooded valley the other, and very little else in earshot but buzzards.

Martinhoe is barely a hamlet: a church, a scatter of houses and the Coast Path running past. βš“ Woody Bay and Heddon's Mouth are both walkable from the door if you fancy the climb back up afterwards.

Have you walked down to Heddon's Mouth before?

Bury | A packhorse bridge, a ford, and the first tree turning.

The medieval packhorse bridge at Bury crosses the Haddeo beside one of the last working fords in the country. One beech has gone copper already while everything around it is still green, which is about right for the first week of September.

Bury is a handful of houses on the eastern edge of Exmoor, close to Dulverton and a short drive from Wimbleball Lake. Cars still splash through the ford beside the bridge rather than over it.

Would you drive through the ford, or take the bridge?

Hans Meadow, Trentishoe | Bright, level and close to the sea.

A recently renovated bungalow just below Trentishoe's little church, on Exmoor's northern edge. Everything inside is new, it is all on one floor, and there is space for five without anyone feeling squeezed underfoot.

The Heddon Valley and Heddon's Mouth are a short drive, where the river runs down through the woods to a pebble beach between two of the highest sea cliffs in England. Parracombe and the Fox and Goose are a few minutes inland.

Horner Wood | Two ponies, and the bracken on the turn.

A pair of Exmoor ponies picking their way through the whortleberry and bracken in Horner Wood, the ferns already going bronze around them. They are a native breed, hardy enough to live out on the moor all year.

Horner Wood is one of the largest ancient oak woodlands left in Britain, running up the combe from Horner village towards Dunkery. The ponies drift down off the tops into the shelter of the trees as the weather turns, which is why you often meet them here rather than out on the open moor.

Have you come across the ponies in the woods rather than out on the open moor?

The Garden Studio, Woodcombe | Two of you, under North Hill.

A studio for two set in the owners' garden on the edge of Woodcombe, with North Hill rising 900ft directly behind. Quiet, self-contained, and a few minutes from the start of the South West Coast Path.

Minehead is where the Coast Path begins, so you can walk out of the door and follow it west towards Selworthy and Bossington, or take the West Somerset Railway inland instead. Dunster and its castle are ten minutes down the coast road.

Have you walked the first stretch of the Coast Path out of Minehead?
