Hawk Combe | Sunlight sweeping the fields above Porlock

A shaft of morning sun moves across the small fields and wooded slopes of Hawk Combe, picking out the hedgerows and the deep green of the valley above Porlock. Behind, the cloud is breaking up to promise a fine day on the moor.

There's a particular pleasure in watching the light travel across a landscape like this — the way a single beam can spotlight one field, one farmhouse, one fold of the hill, before moving on. Hawk Combe gives you a front-row seat: a steep, wooded valley running straight up from the edge of Porlock onto the open tops, with a footpath that lets you climb from village to summit in under an hour. Few places pack so much variety into so short a walk.

Oare Manor Cottage, Oare | The heart of Doone Valley, for walkers and wanderers.

Down in the green Oare valley — Lorna Doone country — Oare Manor Cottage is a proper Exmoor base for exploring. Four bedrooms sleeping 6, with the little church of Oare, the Badgworthy water and miles of moorland walking right on the doorstep.

It's wonderfully off the beaten track: deer on the hills, the coast at County Gate a short drive, and the kind of peace that's getting harder to find. Bring the boots and the family.

Whitley Farm, Molland | July just opened up — 20% off last-minute stays

Blue sky over the old stone farmhouse, lunch laid out on the garden table, and not another soul for miles. July at Whitley Farm is usually spoken for long in advance — this year a rare gap means the whole month is still free.

Horner Valley | An ancient oak framing the view

A gnarled old oak leans out over the Horner Valley from Dicky's Path, its branches framing the green sweep of hills and woodland beyond. Trees like this have stood here for centuries, watching the seasons turn over one of the most beautiful valleys in the West Country.

Horner Wood is a temperate rainforest — one of the largest and most important areas of ancient oak woodland left in Britain, draped in mosses, ferns and rare lichens that thrive in the clean, damp air. Veteran oaks like this one are the heart of it, supporting an extraordinary web of life from beetles to bats to the red deer that shelter beneath them. To stand beside a tree that was already old when your great-great-grandparents were born is to feel time stretch in the best possible way.

Granny's Ride | A wind-sculpted tree on the moor's edge

A solitary tree, bent and shaped by decades of weather, marks the edge of the moor on Granny's Ride, with the Vale of Porlock spread out far below and the hills rolling on toward the coast. The trees up here grow low and lean, sculpted by the wind into living weathervanes.

This is the meeting place of two Exmoors — the high, wild, open moor above and the green, sheltered farmland of the vale below. Granny's Ride traces that boundary, and trees like this one cling to the threshold, leaning permanently away from the prevailing wind that sweeps in off the Bristol Channel. They're a reminder of how exposed this landscape can be, and of how much life finds a way to thrive here regardless.
