Olga Polizzi's beautifully restored country house hotel, situated on the Devon/Cornwall border overlooking 108 acres of woodland gardens and the stunning Tamar Valley. Come and stay the night, the weekend, or bring your friends and family for a celebration weekend, party or wedding and have the whole place to yourself with one of our exclusive use packages. We are also open for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner to non-residents and our gardens are open to the public year round.

The garden has taken on a very different feel in the constant heat, it is a place to observe from the shade rather than enthusiastically explore, the grottoes and follies offer respite from sun rather than adventure and the rose arch and yew walk provide shady colonnades from which to peer out, blinking, at the sun-bleached scene. The water, intended by Repton to add drama to the scene, has a more soothing effect now that the flow has lessened and the sound is reminiscent of the paradise gardens of the middle east: cooling, calming and captivating. What a summer we are having! Endless blue skies and sunshine stretching now for several months, and whilst this does pose serious dilemmas from a horticultural point of view, I am determined to revel in this very un-British weather. So far this summer has been one long exotic foreign holiday without leaving the country. At Endsleigh we are now entering unchartered territory: the striped green lawns have gone, replaced by sunbaked savanna; the Tamar, which was only months ago a raging torrent, is reduced to a gently meandering stream; trees jettison their leaves in an effort to conserve water; and the borders are certainly looking somewhat parched, with many flowers having lived fast and died young. ‘As far as historical pedigrees for a hotel go, it doesn’t get much more impressive than this: the hotel is located in a magnificent Grade I-listed manor house that was formerly owned by the Duke of Bedford, and set within 108 acres of woodland dotted with follies and grottoes, all conceived by Humphry Repton’. In the latter half of June and into July the Rose Walk takes centre stage. To the rear of the long border, a hundred metre long arch bedecked in scented roses offers a sensory overload, and once again the hours of pruning and cosseting are forgiven as the heady scent and plethora of blooms attracts admiration from all ☀️ 🔄
