Celebrating 100 years of Beryl Cook!

We’re incredibly lucky to have one of Britain’s most loved and instantly recognisable artists hailing from just down the road in Plymouth.

This month marks the centenary of Beryl Cook, born in September 1926, and what better excuse to celebrate some of her greatest works!

Bold, colourful, funny and wonderfully human, her paintings captured everyday life with such warmth and affection. Pubs, parties, dancing, shopping, seaside life and, of course, the larger-than-life characters of Plymouth all found their way onto her canvas.

For us, she is quite simply Plymouth’s greatest artist and a brilliant part of our West Country creative heritage.

Happy 100th birthday, Beryl!

Here are just a few of our favourites…

There’s something rather lovely about friends coming to stay at One Drake Road ❤️

An overnight stay, drinks out on the town, breakfast back at ours the next morning, followed by a leisurely mooch around Tavistock.

No big plans. Just good friends, plenty of laughter and time together.

And, of course, the obligatory front-door selfie before everyone heads home!

This is exactly how we love to see One Drake Road enjoyed. A home from home, right in the heart of Tavistock.

Sometimes the journey really is as beautiful as the destination 🇮🇹

Yesterday I drove from Forte dei Marmi on the Mediterranean coast back home to Coreglia Antelminelli, taking the mountain route straight through the extraordinary Apuan Alps.

Leaving the sea behind, I climbed through Seravezza and into increasingly dramatic mountain scenery, surrounded by towering limestone peaks, marble quarries, deep ravines and tiny villages clinging to the hillsides.

I passed beneath Monte Corchia and Monte Sumbra, before disappearing through the Cipollaio Tunnel, which cuts through the mountains and takes you from Versilia into the wild, green landscape of the Garfagnana.

Then came beautiful Isola Santa, its tiny medieval village sitting beside an emerald reservoir created by the hydroelectric dam. Quite an unexpected sight hidden amongst the mountains.

From there I followed the Turrite Secca down towards Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, before joining the Serchio Valley and eventually climbing again towards Coreglia Antelminelli.

The fascinating thing is that the journey crosses the Apuan Alps before finishing on the slopes of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, with the Serchio Valley lying between the two great mountain ranges.

In little more than an hour, you travel from Mediterranean palms and beaches to marble mountains, tunnels, dams, chestnut forests and medieval Tuscan villages.

Quite some drive home!

Well, this has absolutely made our day! 💗

We’re rather thrilled to see One Drake Road taking pride of place as the lead image on Booking.com’s latest social media campaign, ahead of some truly incredible hotels and stays from around the world.

From our little corner of Tavistock to the front of a global Booking.com post. Seeing that pink door and our Georgian home beaming out to millions of people feels pretty special!

We’ve always believed that independent hospitality can stand shoulder to shoulder with the very best, and moments like this make all the hard work, decorating, polishing, gardening and endless bed making worthwhile.

Thank you Booking.com for putting One Drake Road, Tavistock front and centre.

We’re chuffed to bits! 💗

Another beautiful addition to our ever growing collection of original and limited edition artwork by local and regional artists.

We’ve just welcomed Golden Hour Glow by the incredibly talented Demi Lang to One Drake Road. This stunning hand embellished giclée print captures that magical moment when the last light of the day dances across the city, with genuine gold leaf catching the light in a way that changes throughout the day. Each piece is individually finished by the artist, making every print unique.

We love filling our house with work that tells a story and celebrates the creativity of artists from our region. It’s all part of creating spaces that feel personal, inspiring and memorable for our guests.

Next time you stay with us, take a moment to look around. Every room has its own story to tell, and we’re always delighted to support exceptional local talent. ✨ 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗶 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗿𝘁

Back of house doesn’t have to mean boring.

Meet Gracie. 🐾

Painted by the wonderfully talented Emily Powell , this joyful portrait has taken pride of place in the engine room of One Drake Road… our utility room, where the towels are folded, the laundry is sorted and the magic behind the scenes happens.

Now, before anyone says it… yes, we know she looks a little pregnant in the painting! We promise she isn’t. Our Gracie is actually rather slim, but that’s part of the charm. Art captures personality, not perfection, and this portrait makes us smile every single day.

We believe every corner of One Drake Road deserves to be beautiful, even the spaces our guests never see. If you’re going to spend time folding towels, you might as well do it with a splash of colour, a wagging tail and a piece of original art.

Thank you, Emily, for bringing our much loved Gracie to life in your wonderfully expressive style. 💕🐶

We are absolutely delighted to share some wonderful news… 💚

One Drake Road has been awarded the Green Tourism Gold Award – the highest level of accreditation awarded by Green Tourism and one of the most respected sustainability awards in the hospitality industry.

As a small, owner-operated business, this recognition means the world to us. Every improvement has been made by the two of us, from restoring antique furniture and reducing waste to saving energy and water, supporting local businesses and creating a haven for wildlife in our courtyard garden.

We are incredibly proud to be the only accommodation provider in Tavistock to hold the Green Tourism Gold Award, demonstrating that heritage, luxury and sustainability really can go hand in hand.

This joins our recent achievements as Gold winners at the 2025–26 Devon Tourism Awards and national finalists at the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence 2026, making it an unforgettable year for One Drake Road.

A heartfelt thank you to Green Tourism for recognising our commitment, and to our wonderful guests for supporting our journey. We look forward to continuing to improve, one thoughtful step at a time.

Character. Heritage. Sustainability. Welcome to One Drake Road. 💚🌿

We have got some wonderful news to share today.

One Drake Road has officially been awarded the Green Tourism Gold Award.

This is a huge moment for Jack and me because we’re a small, owner-operated business, and every environmental improvement has been made by the two of us, one step at a time.

We’re incredibly proud that One Drake Road is now the only accommodation provider in Tavistock to hold the Green Tourism Gold Award. It’s recognition of the care we’ve taken to restore our 1752 Georgian property, reduce waste, save energy and water, support local businesses and artists, and create a more sustainable stay for our guests.

This award isn’t about being perfect—it’s about making thoughtful decisions every single day and continually striving to do better.

Thank you to for this incredible recognition, and thank you to every guest who has chosen to stay with us and support our journey.

We look forward to welcoming you to One Drake Road, where character, hospitality and sustainability go hand in hand.
