The 3-to-5 Year Dance of the Sands.
The Teignmouth Bar: A 150-year-old mystery solved? 🏝️🔄

Captain Spratt’s biggest discovery was that the sandbanks at the mouth of the Teign follow a predictable 3-to-5 year cycle. Here’s how the "dance" works:

The Birth of the Poles: Sand accumulates at the "Ness Pole" (near Shaldon) and the "Outer Pole."

The Migration: Over several years, waves and tidal currents push these massive sandbanks shoreward. They elongate, fragment, and slowly "walk" across the channel.

The Horseshoe: As they move, they form what Spratt called the "Inner Pole" and the arcuate "Horseshoe Bank."

The Landing: Eventually, these sands merge with the Den beach, providing a fresh "recharge" of sand to our seafront before the whole process starts again.

Next time you see the waves breaking far out at sea, you’re looking at the next chapter of the cycle!

🚶‍♀️ Short SWCP walk that's perfect for getting out in winter 🚆🌊

You’ll start in Teignmouth, walking past the Victorian sea wall ⚓ before slipping under the railway near Parsons Tunnel and climbing Smuggler’s Lane towards Holcombe. From the clifftops, the views open out across the coast towards Dawlish 🌿

The walk isn’t long and it’s fairly manageable, but don’t underestimate it. There are a few steep ups and downs near Dawlish, and timing matters here. This stretch should only be walked in calm conditions, and never when the tide is coming in fast 🌊⚠️

The route drops you down at Dawlish beach, where you can spot the famous black swans 🦢, grab a cream tea ☕🍰, or hop straight on the scenic train back to Teignmouth 🚆

If you want to extend it, you can keep going to Dawlish Warren 🏖️ or link it into a longer South West Coast Path adventure.

📍 Full walking directions, safety tips and extensions are in the full guide

STORM SIREN II, Teignmouths Pilot boat.

STORM SIREN II is an ex-RNLI Mersey class lifeboat for Filey station.
Whilst there she was known as KEEP FIT ASSOCIATION, her official RNLI number being 1170 and her operational number being 12-13.
In service for Filey station from 1991 until 2021 where she was in the relief fleet until 2024.
Bought by Teignmouth Harbour Authority in May 2024 she was renamed STORM SIREN II on the 21st November 2024 and saw service from December.

To be used as a Pilot boat STORM SIREN II was recoded as such. She also had her bow stregthened and railings installed so the pilot can be safely clipped on. I believe the seats also saw an upgrade. Another great safety feature is her ability to self right should she capsize, a feature on all Mersey class lifeboats.

Some specs....
Lenght: 11.62 metres
Beam: 4 metres
Draught: 1.02 metres
Propulsion: 2x 285 hp Caterpillar 3208T diesel engines
Speed: 17 knots
