Rockaway Park will host its 8th edition of the Rockaway Arts Weekend (RAW) on Saturday 19th from 11am - 11pm & Sunday 20th from 11am - 7pm. 
The event - Rockaway’s biggest of the year, transforms the whole site into a free daytime festival of exhibitions, installations, workshops and live art, followed by a ticketed evening of live music on Saturday with Invada records Billy Nomates  (solo set) & ex Beak & Robert Plant stalwart Billy Fuller. The evening will also see a DJ set from legendary Bristol producer Ray Mighty. Tickets available at Headfirst.
On Sunday, our main feature will be an exclusive screening and Q&A of Invada films feature film GAME, with a Q&A after with writer and director Geoff Barrow & John Minton, The film stars Mark Beasant & Jason Williamson from UK musical pioneers, Sleafford Mods. Film screening is at 4pm (this is a ticketed event) Tickets available at Headfirst. This year’s RAW will bring together resident artists and guest makers from across the UK working in painting, sculpture, print, textiles, glass, metalwork and street art alongside a multitude of workshops curated by Fieldwork including: Badge making, Ink cap mushroom screenprinting by Justine Green and Risograph poster making by Formatte.           
Exhibitions on site feature prolific a solo show from photographer Chris Killip in the Gallery, A display of new textile works by Black Lodge Press and a special group show featuring many of Rockaway’s residents curated by Kaye Dunnings (Shangri-La Glastonbury)
Elsewhere, there are live demos in letterpress printing by House Of Jo and glass blowing by Lydia Swann and a graffiti workshop by Billy Colours.
Live art and performance on Saturday comes from the cosmic Microrave, and Acid House Therapy, while Sunday brings Clown and Shadow Puppet Show Thimble and the Bug Band

From 6pm we’ve got The Fantasy Orchestra bringing more than 50 musicians to Rockaway for a huge, colourful, joyful live show.

Their setlist jumps across genres and continents, with glitter, greasepaint, brilliant outfits and a whole lot of noise.

🎟 £12 advance / £15 on the door

The café and bar will be open throughout with hot food, drinks and snacks.

We’re open with free entry Saturday (until 5pm) and all day Sunday, so come and have a wander around Rockaway while you’re here.

You can also see PALATABLE, an exhibition by south-west based artist Gladys Chav Harvey, exploring injustice, migration, belonging and the question of how we make work people won’t turn away from.

Music by The Fantasy Orchestra

Welcome to Rockaway Park, a joyful DIY utopia tucked inside an old Somerset quarry.

We’ve had hundreds of new followers over the last few days, thanks in no small part to Bos Finesse & Pitlad, so we thought we should probably try and explain who we are and what we do. Rockaway has never been the easiest place to sum up.

It’s a place where art, music, community, rebellion and kindness all sit side by side.

We’re home to a vegan café, two music stages, artist studios, workshops, a community garden, gallery, rehearsal and recording space, The Chapel of Unrest, and more sculptures, murals, installations and oddities than we could ever count.

The Chapel of Unrest is a monument to our people and to protest, resistance and community. Everyone is welcome and we’re continuing to build a space that reflects that. We’ve also got an exciting automata project in the works exploring the History of Protest.

Someone once described Rockaway as “Disneyland meets Scrapheap Challenge” and we’ll happily take that.

We’re halfway between Bristol, Bath and Glastonbury, but once you’re through the gates it feels like its own little world. A place built by hand, held together by community and fuelled by the belief that another way of living is absolutely possible.

And if you want to really help us out and you’re around this weekend, we’ve got The Fantasy Orchestra playing on Saturday night (£12 or £15 on the door) and Rockaway is open all day Saturday and Sunday, completely free to visit.

Pop into the Chapel and say hello to Innes while you’re here. We’ve got the opportunity to apply for some funding for our History of Protest automata project, so you’ll have a chance to interact with the automata and let us know what you think. If you’ve already seen them, please fill in the feedback form using the QR code. It genuinely helps us make the case for the project and we’ll love you forever.

ROCKAWAY ARTS WEEKEND IS NEARLY HERE

It’s become the biggest weekend of the year at Rockaway, with pretty much the whole place taken over by art, music, film, workshops, open studios, exhibitions, installations, food, a bar and whatever else we manage to squeeze in.

We’ll be open from 11am on both Saturday and Sunday and most of the weekend is completely free.

It’s family friendly, dogs are very welcome on leads, and if you’re parking on site we’ll be asking for a £5 parking donation.

Then we’ve got two special ticketed events.

SATURDAY NIGHT: BILLY FULLER + BILLY NOMATES

Billy Fuller of Beak> and Billy Nomates are coming to Rockaway, followed by guest DJs taking us into the night.

6pm - Doors
7pm - Music starts

Billy Fuller is a founding member and bass player in Beak>, has spent 17 years playing with Robert Plant, played on Massive Attack’s Heligoland and released his debut solo album Fragments earlier this year.

Billy Nomates, aka Tor Maries, released her third album Metalhorse last year and is bringing a solo set to Rockaway.

SUNDAY: GAME + Q&A WITH JOHN MINTON & GEOFF BARROW

On Sunday we’ll be screening GAME, followed by an in-person Q&A with director John Minton and co-writer and producer Geoff Barrow, founding member of Portishead and Beak>.

The film stars Marc Bessant and Jason Williamson of Sleaford Mods and follows ageing raver David after a car crash leaves him trapped deep in the woods with a mysterious poacher watching from the edges.

2.30pm - Doors
3pm - GAME
Q&A with John Minton + Geoff Barrow after the film

The film is a 15.

Tickets for both events are on Headfirst now and linked in our bio. Tickets are cheaper in advance than on the door.

Under 18s need to be accompanied by an adult and under 15s go free for Saturday night.

You don’t need a ticket to come and enjoy the rest of Arts Weekend, so come down from 11am, have a wander and see what everyone’s been up to.

I've been dreaming of changes to the entrance to Rockaway since I first came here 25 years ago..

At last it's beginning to look like I imagined it.

There's a whole story behind the 'Peace' symbol which I've told the story of in a post somewhere below on my timeline..

I'll get round to putting the whole story together one day, but if I don't post this now, it will slip into the ether, so here's a glimpse of the current state of play.....
