Back in September, Will, our Garden Supervisor, contacted Manorbrook Primary School to ask if they would like to help paint our six wooden compost doors in the Kitchen Garden. The teachers were very keen to get involved with the project and held a competition at the school to decide which children would be selected to paint the boards - the response from the children was very well received with over 100 entries!

The winning children then spent many hours designing their artwork on our boards during after-school clubs and even in some lunchtimes, using the acrylic paints provided by the castle to bring their designs to life.

Once finished, the castle team collected the boards and brought them back to the Kitchen Garden where they were installed, and given a fresh coat of varnish to help preserve the artwork.

Manorbrook Primary School then returned with the children who painted the boards so that they could see their amazing artwork in situ.

Will then went on to attend one of the assemblys held at school to hand out prizes to the top three entries, which were chosen by the Heads of Department at Thornbury Castle. All of the children who took part received a watercolour set, while the winners received full art sets.

The winners were:
1st prize — Thomas, Year 6
2nd prize — Harrison, Year 2
3rd prize — Piper, Year 3

Well done to all of the children who got involved, we know Will thoroughly enjoyed immersing himself in the project, and we can guarantee that our guests will be in awe as they stroll through the Kitchen Garden and observe the bright, cheerful designs. Do take a look next time you are visiting!
