On the cliffs of Porthcurno, Rowena Cade built what would become the Minack Theatre. Much of the theatre you see today, including the seats, steps, walkways and pillars, was made from concrete mixed with sand that Rowena carried up from Porthcurno beach on her back.

It often surprises visitors to learn how she achieved such even, consistent pillars without modern equipment. Rowena shaped them using rolls of lino tied with string to form the concrete. When the concrete began to set, she returned to it and carefully etched patterns and details using an old screwdriver, working at the exact same moment when the mixture was just right for making.

Those who lived nearby remembered how dedicated she was to her work. Neighbours recalled seeing the light of her torch moving down the cliff in the middle of the night, as she went to decorate the concrete before it set. Her attention to detail and commitment to the site was simply part of who she was.

What & Where

Showery Tor is up on Bodmin Moor, near Camelford, Cornwall.

It features a granite rock outcrop (a tor) about 5 m high, surrounded by a tor cairn — a big ring-bank of stones built around the natural rock.

The cairn has external dimensions roughly 37 m by 30 m (NNE-SSW × WNW-ESE) and the bank is up to 3 m high in places.

Purpose & Significance

It’s a ceremonial / ritual monument, dating from the Bronze Age.

The shape (ring of rubble around a central tor) suggests it was used for ceremonies, possibly burials or rituals, though there’s no clear evidence of intact burials under it (or at least none recorded).
