Sailing down the lake with Ullswater Steamers under clouds, rain, sunshine or rainbows is always an absolute treat.

A one-way trip from Pooley Bridge to hike back from Howtown across the fells, or a return trip to enjoy a walk and lunch in Glenridding, are two of our favourite ways to make the most of these beautiful boats.

Easy like a Sunday morning… with a visit to Verey Books for a leisurely browse, book treats, fabulous coffee, and sometimes a scrumptious cake. Possibly the best bookshop in the world and less than 3 miles from Rose in Pooley Bridge…📚

All about the views today on the Helvellyn trail challenge by Lakeland Trails - we didn’t get soaked, and we didn’t pause for breath in our chat, which all adds up to an excellent event 💙

Starting in Glenridding, 7 miles along the shores of Ullswater from Rose, it’s been a great reason to head down the lake for a change of scenery.

A trail run or hike in the hills that includes a quick dip in a tarn is up there with the best things to enjoy in the Lake District.

A fab route we did in the summer from Dalehead (accessed down the east shore of Ullswater, 25 minutes drive from Rose) up into the fells was designed around a refreshing swim in Angletarn. Invigorating!

The trails around and above Ullswater are awesome, with a great mix of family friendly and more adventurous routes. This tree just below the route of the Ullswater Way is one of my faves that we often walk up to from the lake shores towards the fells.

The Ullswater shores are just 2.5 miles from Rose and this path beneath Arthur’s Pike is a great family friendly option when accessed from the back of any of the campsites on the East shores.

In the top 3 reasons of why we love Rose is… the pub two doors away. The lovely team at Queens Head Tirril successfully catered for 19 of us last night, filling us full of traditional home-cooked food and a steady supply of fine local beverages!

From Rose it’s just 35 steps as an adult, 50 steps for a seven year old, and I’m not sure how many 🐾 as a dog, but it’s fab that we’re all welcome on their beautiful stone flagged floors, under their ancient beams, as close to the roaring fires as we can snuggle in.

Friday funday means… time to get excited about fun with family, and friends who feel like family. Ullswater Yacht Club has a lot to answer for - the opportunity to make lifelong friends with a shared love of messing about in, and on, the water. Filling Rose with a house full of them is definitely a top Friday feeling…

The latest treat to turn up on Tirril’s doorstep is the wonders of the flavoured milk vending machine by fabisfabulousmilk

The whole experience is fabulous from the funky shed, to the glass bottle vending machine, to our heated debates over which flavours to pick, to the giant cow outside (we love her as much as the real ones in the field next door!)

Under a mile from Rose, they stock milk, eggs, wagyu and more - there’s a path along the road from Tirril, or a more scenic route along the bridleway to make the walk into a loop.

Post-run treats this weekend at Armathwaite Hall Hotel and Spa were truly fabulous. However, a green velvet footstool is the closest I currently have at Rose to channelling the joy of the Armathwaite lounge, but the wood panelling, the carpets, the furniture, ooh it’s all interior inspiration!

On the shores on Bassenthwaite lake, only 35 minutes drive from Rose, the fantastic food and beautiful spa setting are well worth a day trip.

Sharing the small joys of our Lake District fun, here I come. First up, planning new routes on the Footpath Route Planner - it’s gradually helping me be more realistic about the time it’ll take to do an adventure once I do a reality-check on elevation!

The Keswick Half Marathon this weekend was fabulous. The road-based route wound up a few hills and then back around Derwentwater - truly gorgeous, despite the drizzle.

Keswick is a 30-minute drive from Rose, where there are loads of adventures to be had from hikes in the hills to cake consumption…
