🥃 A little piece of Highland history on our doorstep…

One of the many beautiful walks from Pinefield Lodge takes you past the remains of the Balcladaich illicit whisky still, hidden away amongst the trees.

In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, small hidden stills like this were used across the Highlands to quietly produce whisky away from the authorities. Tucked into the woodland beside a huge boulder, you can still see the stone remains today and imagine how well concealed it once would have been. 🌲🥃

It’s one of those little places you could easily walk past without realising the history sitting right beside you.

Just another reason we love this area: beautiful walks, peaceful woodland and fascinating Highland history all around us. ❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

🌿 Did you know Guisachan once generated its own electricity? ⚡

Hidden away in the woodland near the ruins of Guisachan House are the remains of an old hydroelectric system, where the power of the water was once used to provide electricity for the estate.

Today, you can still spot traces of its fascinating past amongst the waterfall, old stonework, machinery and beautiful iron bridge, all slowly being reclaimed by nature.

It’s such a peaceful, atmospheric place to explore and one of the many little pieces of local history right on our doorstep at Pinefield Lodge. 💚

Perfect for a quiet walk, some beautiful photographs and a glimpse into Guisachan’s past.

🏰 Step back in time at Urquhart Castle

Just 18 miles from Pinefield Lodge, one of Scotland’s most iconic landmarks sits proudly on the shores of Loch Ness.

With over 1,000 years of history, Urquhart Castle has witnessed fierce battles, changing clans and royal visits. The ruins you see today date largely from the 13th to 16th centuries, before the castle was deliberately blown up in 1692 to stop it falling into enemy hands.

Today you can wander through the impressive Grant Tower, explore the ancient ruins, admire breathtaking views across Loch Ness and discover the fascinating stories that shaped the Highlands.

Whether you’re a history lover, photographer or simply looking for an unforgettable day out, Urquhart Castle is a must-visit during your stay at Pinefield Lodge.
