Hi all, recent guests who study moths and butterflies were impressed with our "no-mow" meadow area at Crofton House Hotel. They stayed with us end of June. They wrote the following, which we would like to share with you all and impress to create your own little wild life area:
"The Little Meadow at Crofton House Hotel.
> The un-mowed grass of approximately 70 square metres to created a little meadow for wild life.
> The meadow grasses have various meadow flowers such as yellow ragwort, yarrow, hawkweed, self heal and many more.
> In late June many insects visited the meadow.
> A pair of meadow brown butterflies were breeding, happy to lay their eggs in the meadow grass.
> Cinnabar moths flew over the area as their caterpillars fed on the ragwort.
> Many butterflies visited including small white, common blue, meadow brown, small Heath and numerous varieties of bumble bees visited the meadow to feed on the wild flowers.
> This little area of uncut grass has created a much needed space for these insects, so imagine the immense benefit to our wild life if we all allowed a small area of our gardens to grow in to a little meadow"
Our meadow area is still thriving with various insects.
