Here’s why I reckon £5.50 for a bar of soap is actually a bit of a bargain…

Yes, of course you can buy a bar of soap for considerably less in the supermarket. I’m not going to pretend you can’t.

BUT…

£5.50 is less than the price of a nice coffee and a piece of cake these days. And don’t get me wrong, I’m very partial to a nice coffee and a piece of cake 😁, but half an hour later they’re gone.

A bar of handmade soap? That £5.50 gets you weeks and weeks of use.

Weeks of lovely creamy lather. Weeks of gorgeous fragrance every time you walk into the bathroom. Weeks of turning something you have to do every single day into something just a tiny bit nicer.

And that’s before we get onto the fact that it’s handmade in small batches, takes weeks to cure, comes wrapped without a scrap of plastic and, if you look after it properly, lasts a surprisingly long time.

So yes, you can absolutely buy cheaper soap.

But £5.50 for weeks of tiny, everyday luxury?

I reckon that’s pretty good value for money.

Besides, life’s too short for boring soap. 😁

For those of you who are recent followers, as well as running Cadair View Lodge we farm just down the valley. Every April my feed fills with photos, and more often than not there's a pet lamb in the house.

One of my favourites was Jolene. Just before lambing my youngest and I were belting out Dolly songs in the car and agreed that if there was a pet lamb this time, it would be called Jolene. Sure enough, a couple of days later I brought home a tiny premature twin with knuckled over legs that couldn't stand to suckle. Against all the odds she survived, thrived, and had healthy lambs of her own. She's still pottering around the farm being a diva, and every time I see her I'm reminded of those road trips playing Jolene on repeat in the car and singing ourselves hoarse.

P'nawn da, afternoon all,

I'm sitting outside Caban Cudd enjoying 5 minutes' peace and quiet in between changeovers. Somewhere overhead I can hear a red kite calling; earlier this summer we had a talented young Dutch wildlife photographer staying, and he managed to get this superb portrait of our resident kite - you may have seen it near the tall trees on the left as you head towards Trawsfynydd village. Look at that face!

If you've stayed with us what's been your favourite wildlife encounter? I know Caroline has some brilliant pictures of the famous Caban Eryri squirrel, and Jane has met the owls a couple of times.

The biggest mistake people make when trying to bag a bargain break? Booking through an online travel agent (OTA) or reseller.

I'm not naming names but there's one that rhymes with chair, tea, and bee. You spend hours scrolling through their site to find a property you like the look of. You book and pay online. At that point your money starts earning interest in their account.

Meanwhile, the host gets your booking. She is the one who answers all your questions, makes any changes, organises the cleaning, sorts out the welcome basket, makes a dog welcome pack, makes sure you have driving directions, that you know how to work the TV and have the WiFi code. And she is the one that will deal with any problems during your stay and, god forbid, arrange a refund if there's some sort of major disaster.

For all of this, 🪑🫖&🐝 charge YOU a guest fee and charge the HOST a host fee, and she finally gets paid a day or two after you check in.

But if you book direct there's NO guest fee and NO host fee so it will always be a better price and everybody wins.

Full disclosure, our cabins are listed on 🪑🫖&🐝 because that's where a lot of new customers who don't know us yet will be looking. But of course, YOU know better now don't you...

One of the things I'll never get used to as a small business owner is having to think months and months ahead. At the moment we're flat out with peak season arrivals, but today I've seen 3 adverts for bargain Autumn breaks and some places are even starting to mention the C-word. And with just a couple of weeks left of the school holidays I really SHOULD start thinking about what happens next...

Round here we used to call September visitors Pobol Mwyar Duon (Blackberry People) - a gentle nickname for the ones who came in September when the blackberries were out. With climate change the blackberries have usually been and gone by the end of August these days, but Autumn is still a great time to visit Eryri. Attractions and events are still at full swing, but it's that little bit quieter and less "peopley" than August. The nights are cooler but the days are still long enough to get outdoors and enjoy the wonders of nature.

And our midweek deals are back, with up to 5 nights for the price of 2 and single night stays available again from Sunday 6th September. I'll pop the booking link in the comments - if you can get away for a couple of days in Autumn I'd love to welcome you,

Bore da, morning all - look what we got yesterday 😁

OK it was only for a minute and cleared with one swish of my wipers, but I never thought I'd be so glad to see rain in August.

Meanwhile we've been flat out with back to back bookings all month - still a few gaps here and there next week but you'd better be quick if you want to grab one! I'll pop the website link in the comments.

I'm about to become the most popular person in Trawsfynydd as I head to the cabins to distribute 50 pairs of solar eclipse glasses to our guests, plus a few extra resources from my stash 🤣
