Room spotlight: Rhiannon

Next in our series of 10 rooms is Rhiannon, named after one of the most captivating figures in Welsh mythology.

Rhiannon appears in the medieval Welsh tale Pwyll Pendefig Dyfed, one of the stories of the Mabinogion.

Known for her beauty, intelligence and independence, Rhiannon first encounters Pwyll while riding a magical white horse. Despite his attempts to catch up with her, she always remains just out of reach. She eventually becomes Pwyll’s wife, but her story takes a darker turn when she is wrongly blamed for the disappearance of their newborn son. As punishment, she is made to sit outside the palace gates and offer to carry visitors into the court on her back.

One of our King rooms (dog friendly), Rhiannon provides a comfortable and peaceful space to unwind after a day exploring the Welsh countryside. As with all our rooms, you’ll find a selection of teas and coffees, soft towels, dressing gowns and slippers waiting for you.

Room spotlight: Blodeuwedd

Pictured above is the next of our 10 rooms; Blodeuwedd. Named after one of the most fascinating figures in Welsh mythology, Blodeuwedd was a woman created from flowers in the medieval Welsh tale Math fab Mathonwy, one of the stories of the Mabinogion.

Blodeuwedd was created to become the wife of Lleu Llaw Gyffes. Her story takes a darker turn when she falls in love with another man, Gronw Pebr, and the pair plot against Lleu. After their betrayal is discovered, Blodeuwedd is turned (by Lleu’s family) into an owl, destined to live apart from other birds.

Blodeuwedd is one of our Super King rooms, offering a comfortable and relaxing space for guests to unwind after a day exploring the Welsh countryside. As with the rest of our rooms, Blodeuwedd is stocked with a variety of teas and coffees, soft towels, dressing gowns and slippers.

Room spotlight: Dwynwen

Santes Dwynwen is the Welsh patron saint of lovers, celebrated on 25 January—the Welsh equivalent of Valentine’s Day. According to legend, Dwynwen was a 5th-century Welsh princess who fell in love with a man named Maelon. Their relationship was condemned by Dwynwen’s father and as a result she became a nun. She prayed for the happiness of lovers and established a convent on Llanddwyn Island off the coast of Anglesey.

Today, St Dwynwen’s Day is celebrated across Wales with cards, gifts, romantic messages, and celebrations of love and friendship.

Dwynwen is one of our Extra Large Super King rooms, and is ideal for a relaxing, romantic stay.

Room spotlight: Twm Siôn Cati

Pictured above is the next of our 10 rooms; Twm Siôn Cati. Named after a prominent figure in Welsh mythology, he is often referred to as ‘The Welsh Robin Hood.’ Twm was active in West Wales during the late sixteenth century, and can be found in all kinds of tales, including stealing from highwaymen, wooing the widow of the Sheriff of Camarthenshire (ultimately marrying her), and rising from poverty to becoming a justice of the peace. The character is believed to have been based on a real person named Thomas Jones from Tregaron- however it is unlikely that the tales attributed to Twm were the exploits of one man.

Today, it is possible to visit a number of Twm Siôn Cati’s hideouts, including two caves, one on the outskirts of Tregaron, and another at Rhandirmwyn near Llandovery. This cave is only a 30 minute drive from us at the Castle Coaching Inn, making it a perfect activity for those looking to explore the Welsh countryside while also learning about mythology!

Twm Siôn Cati is our two bedroom suite, with one super king and two single beds. This makes it perfect for families of friends who wish to spend as much time together as possible. As with the rest of our rooms, Twm is stocked with a variety of teas and coffees, soft towels, dressing gowns and slippers.

Room spotlight: Owain Glyndŵr

Each of our 10 rooms at the Castle Coaching Inn is named after a famous figure from Welsh mythology, which is shown through a piece of art by local artist Julie Howells.

The room pictured above is called Owain Glyndŵr, named after a fifteenth century Welsh nobleman who led a sixteen year long Welsh revolt, establishing an independent wales free from English rule. The self-declared ‘Prince of Wales’ defied capture and spent the last years of his life in hiding, contributing to his mythological status- ultimately becoming a symbol of both Welsh pride and resilience.

Owain is a Super king room, stocked with a variety of coffees and teas, soft towels, dressing gowns and slippers. Perfect for a weekend getaway or as a base for exploring the Bannau Brycheiniog- we can cater for any occasion!
