Thanks to Carol Klein for promoting my latest addition to the National Plant Collection of Polemonium at Chelsea flower show this evening. My only correction is it is not a Polemonium reptans cultivar — the anthers are always white on reptans and the flowers are smaller. I believe it to be a white flowered cultivar of the Japanese P. yesoense which has that striking central purple ring.

Received a pot of California subspecies on Saturday at the Plant Heritage talk on the restoration of the Palm House at Edinburgh Royal Botanic Garden. I already had Fragaria vesca subsp. bracteata grown from wild collected seed which produced 1 plant last year, and I have planted 3 of the new ones to the west and one back up in a terracotta pot, and to use in displays. I look forward to comparing flowering and fruiting this summer.

Not being able to wander round Garden Centres checking out what’s available, looked on EBAY on Sunday evening, and bought some bare root Fragaria vesca for the National Plant Collection.
Arrived Tuesday lunchtime-
20 Russian bare root plants “brought to the UK as seeds by my grandma from Russia, many decades ago” and flourishing in Huddersfield;
10 Wild Alpine organic strawberries from Tewkesbury- with slightly larger flowers.
The Russians will line up along the northern edge of my centre bed and the Tewkesbury organic ones down the west side, with a couple in terracotta pots to make comparisons easier.

Typed up an additional page for the Polemonium monograph with new cultivar’Violet Heart’ introduction.
I have been removing a lot of Geranium endressii that has encroached on the area I want to plant them in with a fantastic help from my friend Karren this morning. An unfortunate back injury has limited my ability to complete the work, so if anyone wants to volunteer to help renovate the National Plant Collection display it would be most appreciated.

Doing my usual spring search for Polemonium, came across a great video showing a bee visiting aPolemonium on Facebook from Manx Biodiversity and a new introduction called ‘Violet Heart’ from Crocus which I have ordered
It showed up first in a post from Azure Garden Centre in Cramlington, so will have to do some visiting to see which other Garden Centres are sellin it.
If you see it, let me know.

Snowdrop Sundays 11-1 in February include a Monocotyledon lunch-
Leek Soup with garlic bread
Coconut cake with vanilla pod icing.
How are monocotyledons different from dicotyledons apart from the number of seed leaves?
Different arrangements of their stem fibres mean they never form woody stems- the coconut palm is made of fibrous leaf bases rather than a true 🌳.
It also affects how you propagate them, which will be demonstrated in the classroom after lunch, with a potted up snowdrop to take home.
Cost £5 including garden tour, lunch and propagating session.

A lady guest commented that the lavender room all white bedding was very bland, so as a quilt cover needed replacing I went for a purple cotton duvet cover and pillowcase set which was a good match for the curtains but still keeping the Durham quilt and National Trust wool blanket on top. I hope that adds a nice colour contrast while not being too much for any guest staying here.
