When the Sun Became a Crescent

What a spectacular sight in the sky today!

For a little while, the Moon slipped between us and the Sun, turning our familiar sunshine into something wonderfully strange glowing crescent hanging in the sky. 🌙☀️

Today’s 12 August 2026 solar eclipse was the best eclipse visible from the UK and Ireland so far this century, with around 90–96% of the Sun covered by the Moon depending on where you were. (Royal Museums Greenwich⁠)

And this little photograph captured that magical moment beautifully.

There is something rather humbling about looking up and remembering just how perfectly the Sun, Moon and Earth dance together in space.

For a few minutes, the ordinary became extraordinary.
