Situated in one of the most picturesque and tranquil locations in Cornwall the property, which dates back to the 1500s, is a literal stone’s throw from the banks of the beautiful Tresillian River. Proprietors Jonathan and Marilyn Bailey fell in love with the plentiful charms of St Clement during a visit 15 years ago so when the opportunity to renovate The Old Vicarage came up they jumped at the ch

Tregothnan Estate Opens its gates to the public for one weekend a year. We have two remaining rooms for the weekend of 13th & 14th April why not treat yourself. Located on the opposite bank from The Old Vicarage Tregothnana boasts an unequalled diversity of trees and rare plants and the world's largest Rhododendrons with 40-foot crescendos of flowers. A truly sensational sight to behold.

With series 3 of Poldark about to hit our screens next week, it reminded me of our connection to Poldark. The fictional Vicarage inhabited by the Reverend Osborne Whitworth was in the village of St Margaret's and described in Winston Graham's seventh novel - The Angry Tide.
“The lane from the town of Truro out to St Margaret’s followed for part of the way – up the steep hill and down the other side – the main coaching road from St Austell to Truro, the road Ross Poldark has continued on after he had alighted last May. But for the last half mile or so it was a sharp right turn down a gentle declivity lined with trees before you get to the Church and the vicarage”
St Clement Hill, which you travel up on your way to The Old Vicarage, is the old main coach road from St Austell to Truro. Whilst the sharp right hand turn is the only tree lined road which leads to the beautiful Church and our ancient riverside Vicarage.

For the last 5 days St Clement has seen a great many bird enthusiasts on the river bank because a night heron, a very rare visitor to the uk, has been spotted on Tresemple pool along the river path outside our gate. Imagine our surprise and delight this afternoon when there it was sitting on the edge of our pond. I must confess this is not my photo, I could not get close enough but this is what a night heron looks like.

It was not easy, but regretfully, we have made the onerous decision to close the Tea Room and garden to the public. Such was the growing success of this gem that it began to overwhelm our key business of being a superb Guest House offering exclusivity and exceptional service in our tranquil riverside setting. Something had to give.

We are truly sorry to disappoint the many wonderful customers, many of whom have become good friends and we thank each and every one of you for your enthusiasm and support.

Marilyn's now famous scones will still be served at tea time to arriving guests.
