Great Beer and a top company. To win CAMRA GOLD in Great Britain is a breath taking achievement. The cask version is gluten free (but you would never know). Pen-y-Bont Hotel, Tal-y-Llyn loves Purple Moose Brewery/Bragdy Mŵs Piws!

🏆 GOLD for Glaslyn🏆

Last night, Glaslyn won GOLD in the Session Bitter category at the CAMRA Champion Beer of Britain national final.

That alone means a lot to us. But what makes it even more special is that it is 19 years since Glaslyn first won category Gold in the very same competition.

The recipe has not changed. It is still the same Glaslyn we have brewed here in Porthmadog for years.

The only difference now is that Glaslyn, like all of our cask ales, is gluten free. And this award is a brilliant reminder that the quality, flavour and character of the beer are still exactly where they should be.

A huge credit to our brewers, who continue to brew beers with the same care, consistency and quality today as we did 19 years ago.

A proud day for Mŵs Piws, and a big thank you to everyone who has enjoyed Glaslyn over the years.

Bluebells are in abundance this year around Talyllyn. Here is a view from above the Pen-y-Bont Hotel on a recent walk. All the way up the lane, as it takes you around the edge of Llyn Mwyngil, were carpets of bluebells and white campion. Turning off onto the Bridle Path and taking the woodland trail up the hill you come to fields full of bluebells - a spectacular sight!

Some April showers yesterday but in between there was perfect clarity to get some photos across the lake. Soon we will be very busy, looking after our Bed and Breakfast guests in the hotel, as well as accommodating our overnight visitors in Motor homes and Camper vans. Yesterday was a great chance to capture some special moments before the rush. I will post an album of pictures soon, but for now, here is a sample of just how beautiful it looked yesterday, here at the Pen-y-Bont Hotel, Tal-y-llyn.

This completes what is a kind of "Trilogy" of close up shots of the Bwlch, that is, the gap at the North-east end of the Dysynni Valley that forms the distinctive "V-Shape", the focus of our iconic view. Here we see it in full sun on a bright Spring day in March, a hazy blue marvel that portends of the warm Summer days ahead.

It is really noticeable how the number of water fowl on the lake has increased in recent years, There are a number of good reasons for this, including no injuries through fishing tackle and the death of a particularly aggressive swan who chased everything away that dared to land on the water! Here you see a family of Swans, though Goosander, Mallard, Wigeon, and Canada Goose have all been around in good numbers. And its not just the birds, I'm pleased to report that Otters seem to be frequent visitors to our shore, one came up across the Beer Garden and peered through the fence recently. All in all, it's very heartening so I wanted to share the Good News!

The last picture of Winter 2026 at Pen-y-Bont Hotel, Talyllyn? With the daylight hours growing noticeably longer, I predict that my next post will be full of flowers and (hopefully) sunshine! Already the Song Thrush greets us every morning with the soundtrack of spring, supported by a chorus of Chaffinches and the spring warblings of the Great Spotted Woodpecker. We call him the Reverend as he always flies back to St. Mary's Church across the road. Oh, and I shouldn't forget to mention, last week an Otter investigated the Beer Garden!! Curiosity took him (I say "him" it was a big one) right up to the fence. He was just peering through and contemplating coming out onto the road when a car turned in. That of course put an end to any chance I had to grab my camera but you never know, one day a may get lucky and if I do, you will be the first to see the photo!
