Well, the new season here at Cuil Lodge has been running for about a month now. We've already had guests from far and wide - USA, England, Hong Kong, Ukraine, Australia, Germany, Denmark, Switzerland, Hungary, Belgium, Sweden, Netherlands and, of course, Scotland. We look forward to welcoming all the others too in the coming months.

With all the current great weather it was great to be able to head out last Saturday with my good buddy Steve, from Woodbine House for a photo session. We went 'hunting' for wildlife but failed spectacularly. Two seagulls and one sheep really wasn't what we were hoping for. Fortunately at Sconser there is a fairly large herd of Highland cows who like to have their photo taken, so we went there instead.

Following that we made our way down to Elgol. A spectacular drive to a spectacular location with a few landscape photos along the route.

Here's a small selection of the hundreds of photos we took. There's some background comments on each individual photos. We hope you like them, feel free to share.

Following on from the previous post, here's another recommendation for somewhere to go wandering.............

A huge number of people head for the 'famous' Fairy Pools on Skye. To be honest, We've never truly understood why. Maybe it's simply that TripAdvisor, Instagram and Tik Tok have created a monster. Hundreds, or more, flock there every day. So, when people say the place is busy you can understand why they feel that way. Here's an alternative option..............when you get to the car park for the Fairy Pools, drive right past it. Another ten minutes down the road will bring you to Glenbrittle beach. In all honesty, in all the times we've been there it's never been busy. Sometimes, it's deserted and you can have the place to yourself.

There is a cafe on the campsite down there, plus, there are paths you can wander around at the foothills of the 'Black Cuillin' range. We took a short wander there the other afternoon. Here's a few photos we thought worth sharing. As usual, click on each photo for further comments.

Thanks for looking.

We are regularly asked for ideas/suggestions for things to do when guests are staying a few days, and they're not overly keen on visiting the really busy 'hotspots'. Well we can usually make some suggestions and we like to suggest things that we ourselves have experienced. On this basis we're happy to suggest Skye High Wildlife as an interesting option - https://skyehighwildlife.com

As a birthday gift I spent Sunday, on the hunt for wildlife to photograph, with my good whisky buddy Steve, and Stewart Dawber who runs the tours. We had a good start spotting a white-tailed sea eagle but it was pretty far away and unfortunately we never managed to encounter it again. We had a bit of a 'deer stalking' experience through some woods, trying not to snap the twigs underfoot and scaring things away. We spent time on various bits of shoreline patiently waiting, and hoping, for sight of some otters. The weather was a mixed bag, and nature did what nature does. We spotted some interesting wildlife along the way and we have a few photos to share, and maybe inspire you to try something a bit different.

Autumn walks on Skye lets you see some of the fantastic light working its magic. Todays "September Sunday Saunter" took us to Sithean Chumhaing, to the north of Portree. We're once again indebted to Alistair Christie and Ian Stewart (who both live in our village here) for their book, "Trig Point Walks on the Isle of Skye and Raasay". These are not the busy hot spots of Skye, you very often never meet another soul. A fantastic resource if you want to head for the hills up here.

We definitely recommend this walk, despite the lung bursting, calf muscle building, climb to get up on to the higher levels. Here's some photos of this afternoon. Click on the photos to get further information.

The sun seems to have been pretty active recently, Aurora had been photographed here on Skye in recent days. Unfortunately cloud has been in the way for us here at Cuil Lodge, but we're patient and will get some shots to share at some point. If you fancy coming to see what it's all about we do have some availability in October, just check the real-time online calender via our website.

Hi everyone. Our season runs eight months this year and because of that we do have to factor in a few days off here and there.

Some time ago we took the opportunity to plan two days in Inverness over the weekend, primarily to take a boat trip that was a gift from our daughter and her family (Thank you!). We stayed in a lovely B&B, did some personal shopping, did more shopping for our own B&B, and had dinner out on Saturday night. We were tourists ourselves for a change!

While the weather wasn't the greatest on Sunday morning, when you encounter the wildlife you've been hoping to see it doesn't matter. The trip was a 2-hour blast out of Inverness Marina to Chanonry Point and its, marine protected, surrounding area. We, very quickly, got there and it wasn't long before the local dolphins started to make an appearance. It was pretty difficult to photograph them as they're so quick in, and out of, the water. We gave it a go and (out of hundreds 😂) here's a few we thought worth sharing.

Thanks to Spirit Inverness who run the trip. They were fabulous. As we get dolphins around the coast of Skye as well, perhaps they might consider starting another business here? (I have an RYA power boat handling certificate and a marine VHF licence. Just sayin' 😎😂)

Hi everyone, season 2025 started for us a few weeks ago and it's going to be a busy one. We're looking forward to meeting lots of new people and seeing friends return.

Well, as one season begins another is in the process of ending. As the night sky gets lighter each evening it gets more difficult to see the 'Northern Lights'. Not last night though, it was quite epic

For those of you coming to Cuil Lodge over the next few weeks make sure you bring your camera, or know how to use your smartphone in 'Night Mode'. You don't want to miss this, if it happens.

Hi everyone, it's been quite a while since we posted/shared anything on here. We've been busy doing other things, but we're now on the countdown to us re-opening in March. As ever there is a huge amount to do to get ready for another new season. We're currently focussed on things inside the house, but we'll get to the external list when we know the weather will be a bit warmer than it is now. 🥶

Anyways, it can't be all work so, we goofed off on Friday and took a little wander up to Idrigill point across the bay from us. We had seen what looked like golden eagles hovering around and we hoped we might get a close up view and some photos. Alas, it wasn't to be. With not a cloud in the bright blue sky the only two things up there were the 'big yellow ball' that had been hiding for a few months, and half a white ball that you don't normally see during the day...........

It's not a long walk to get up to the top of the hill, and it's worth it for the panoramic views you get especially on the days like we've been having recently. The CalMac ferry, "Hebrides", was on her way into Uig bay as we reached the trig point at the top. So we took some photos of the surrounding areas before heading back down.

For any guests coming this year who fancy this relatively short wander, we hope you are as lucky as we were with the weather.

Hi everyone. We had a very interesting aurora night, last night. The sky was going crazy at times and you could, just about, point a camera in most directions and get something to see.

The really interesting part was that we got to see 'STEVE' in the sky too. This phenomenon is not aurora, but seems to happen near to the aurora, and is a pretty rare sight to see. I'll spare you the 'geek' explanation, but if you Google 'aurora STEVE' you'll get the details. This was only the second time in ten years we've actually seen it, and the first time capturing it on camera.

For those who've seen the 'Northern Lights' you'll understand how often, and quickly, they change. There's a few photos attached, the last three cover a 14 minute time period.

Here's hoping for more nights like last night, but it doesn't look like it'll be tonight. It's a bit grim here at the moment, clouds and high winds.

Hi folks. There's now only 5 weeks until the end of our season, and we do still have some room availability. So, if you feel the urge to grab a few days on the amazing Isle of Skye before the end of October then do check out our website for all the details and online booking.
Our friends at Scotland's Best B&Bs issued the information below a short while ago, many thanks to them for doing that.

PS - We've been getting sight of the 'Northern Lights' since August. There's never any guarantee with this, but you never know...............😎
