How many of you agree with the modern shortened version where you should specialize in one field becoming a master at it?

How many of you, however, believe the original quote had it right and a larger general knowledge is better?

It’s a tough one as I think there’s a place for both. Formerly intended as a compliment, the “Jack Of All Trades” is a generalist rather than a specialist, versatile and adept at many things.

Over the years I’ve taken on a whole range of projects picking up new skills and knowledge meaning I can turn my hand at a plethora of tasks. However, in this time I’ve also recognised both my weaknesses and the importance of specialists, bringing them in at the right time.

Ultimately, I believe, having a good understanding of the various trades and professions can not only be rewarding on a personal level but also means you can really understand the trades and specialists when you’re discussing projects making life clearer for all parties.

Too often we critic ourselves as not being where we want to be without stopping and looking just how far we've come.

Have goals yes but compare yourself to previous you to see your growth and not to the people who are where you want to get to.

You’re setting up your company and trying to think on what to call it?

You’re not alone as so many people over-think this!

Just this week a friend was worrying about one of their existing companies name which was honestly absolutely perfect.

Below are a few tips which I hope you find useful

Choose a name style.

There’s no hard and fast rule for the style of business name that works best. There are a few tried and trusted options from which to choose..

• The Literal – The very definition of keeping things simple. This type of business name lays out precisely what a firm does. Think Travelodge, Homebase and Burger King

• The Owner’s Name – Some companies stick with using a founder or owner’s moniker as their brand name. Think Ford, McDonalds, Cadbury and Ben&Jerry’s

• The Acronym – Choosing a set of initials is another popular business naming tactic. It can help potential customers remember a more extended title, but often gets adopted instead. Think B&Q, BMW and BBC

• The Unrelated – Some firms choose something totally unrelated or abstract to adopt as their name. Doing so is risky but has a lot of upsides. Some of the biggest brand names are now more closely related to their companies than the original meaning. Think Moonpig, Apple, Google and Amazon

Avoid hard-to-spell names.

Potential customers must use your business name. They need to type it in to reach your website or send you emails. Don’t make their lives more difficult by choosing a tough to spell alternative.

To summarise.

• Easy to Say and Pronounce
• Easy to Remember
• Easy to Spell
• Unique
• Domain Name Availability
• Social Media Availability (keeping same naming pattern as domain)
• No Negative Meanings (ie when translated to another language)
