Some places make stepping back in time remarkably easy. 🤍

This is Shanklin Old Village, tucked away on the Isle of Wight.

Think pretty thatched cottages, traditional pubs and tearooms, and the sort of old-world charm that is absolutely captivating.
Some of the buildings here have centuries of history behind them too, including the Old Thatch, believed to date back to 1690.

It’s one of those little pockets of the island that feels completely different from the coast just moments away.

There’s something about island life that gets under your skin. 🌊🤍

Maybe it’s the fact that getting there feels like part of the adventure. Maybe it’s having beaches, rolling countryside, little towns and coastal paths all packed onto one island. Or maybe it’s simply the satisfaction of putting a stretch of water between you and everyday life.

Either way, spend enough time on the Isle of Wight and you start to understand why people keep coming back.

Long before St Catherine’s Lighthouse stood on the coast at Niton, another light was guiding sailors from high above the Isle of Wight.

St Catherine’s Oratory, better known as the Pepper Pot, dates back to the early 14th century. Its story begins with a shipwreck off Chale Bay and a cargo of wine destined for a monastery.

After local landowner Walter de Godeton was found to have taken some of the cargo, he was ordered to build an oratory as penance, with a light maintained there to warn ships of the dangerous coastline.

More than five centuries later, St Catherine’s Lighthouse was built by Trinity House in 1838, continuing a centuries-old tradition of guiding vessels around the island’s southern coast.

Today, both still stand - two very different landmarks bearing the St Catherine’s name and telling two chapters of the same stretch of coastline’s maritime history.

And yes... one of them really does owe its existence partly to some stolen wine. 🍷👀

Beach days, morning coffees and everything you need within a stroll... 🌊🐚

🌊✨ For an island you can cross in around an hour, the Isle of Wight packs rather a lot in. Dramatic coastline, colourful seaside towns, centuries of history and some seriously spectacular views - these six are a very good place to start.

🌿 The Pepper Pot - Perched high above the southern coast, this medieval lighthouse is one of the island’s more unusual landmarks, with beautiful countryside and coastal walks surrounding it.

🏖️ Shanklin - A classic Isle of Wight seaside escape, known for its sandy beach, traditional Old Village and the leafy paths and waterfalls of Shanklin Chine.

⛵ Cowes - The island’s sailing capital, where the waterfront, marina, independent shops and lively atmosphere make it well worth a wander - particularly when Cowes Week rolls around.

🌊 The Needles - Perhaps the Isle of Wight’s most iconic view. These unmistakable chalk stacks rise from the sea at the island’s western tip, alongside the red-and-white Needles Lighthouse.

☀️ Ventnor - Colourful, creative and tucked beneath the cliffs of the island’s south coast, with a lovely beach, independent places to eat and a famously mild microclimate.

🏰 Carisbrooke Castle - Almost 1,000 years of history in one place. Explore the castle walls, take in the panoramic island views and discover its connection to King Charles I.
