If you’ve been following along, you’ll know how we went from a quiet 1800s private home to a Victorian hotspot hosting famous creatives at The Wellington Hotel. Through the 20th century, our coastal hotel stood strong through two World Wars, changing seaside trends and generations of holidaymakers seeking that clean Ventnor air. Through every decade, these walls remained a reliable haven of hospitality, watching history unfold right outside our front door. Now, it’s our turn to write the next piece of that story. If you caught our last post, you’ll know how Ventnor blew up in the mid-1800s as the UK’s ultimate health resort and how our building was originally put up on Belgrave Road as a private residence to soak in those sea views!
By the late 1800s, though, it wasn’t just health-seekers arriving. Ventnor had become the hotspot for Victorian big-names. Iconic writers like Charles Dickens and Ivan Turgenev flocked right to our street, drawing inspiration from the dramatic cliffside.
It was during this golden era that our grand home opened its doors wider, officially transitioning into a full hotel to host the poets, artists and high-society travellers escaping city life. While we’re busy giving our dining areas a fresh look behind the scenes, we’re keeping the history lesson going!
Back in the mid-1800s, Ventnor suddenly became the place to be. A royal doctor named Sir James Clark declared our microclimate a total cure-all, and overnight, Victorian high society flooded the south coast for the fresh air.
High on Belgrave Road, right in the middle of that boom, our building went up originally built as a grand private residence before later evolving into the hotel we know today. It was designed from day one to soak up those sweeping channel views across the Ventnor coastline.

After another fantastic weekend of weddings, celebrations and happy guests, it’s time for our amazing team to enjoy some well-earned downtime before we do it all over again next weekend.

Meanwhile, our guests enjoyed plenty of laughs, great company and bottomless Prosecco throughout the celebrations! 🍾✨
