Dawn at Charney Manor 🌿

A gentle wander through our three acres in Oxfordshire, accompanied by the early morning chorus. In just a few minutes, the garden revealed an incredible line-up — European Goldfinch, Eurasian Wren, European Greenfinch, Rook, Great Tit, Common Woodpigeon, European Robin, and Eurasian Blackbird.

Before the day begins, the garden is already full of life - and available to all our retreat and B & B guests ❤️

🌍 Earth Day — and every day — at Charney Manor

We’re proud to be doing our bit to care for the planet, not just today but all year round. As a Green Tourism Silver member, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do.

At Charney Manor, when it comes to looking after the planet, we start with the small things — because they all add up.

From glass water bottles and avoiding single-use plastics, to harvesting rainwater for our gardens, we’re always looking for ways to tread more lightly. We grow as much of our own fruit and vegetables as possible — rhubarb, pears, plums, apples, figs and more — so our guests can enjoy true ‘metres to table’ produce, with no air miles in sight.

Our gardens don’t just feed our guests — they support our wildlife too. From bee and insect houses to birds and even a couple of resident hedgehogs, we’re proud to provide a safe and thriving habitat.

Inside, you’ll find thoughtful touches everywhere: planet-friendly toiletries, energy-efficient lighting powered by renewable sources, and smart heating designed for comfort with less waste. We also offer EV charging and cycle storage to help you travel a little greener.

Caring for our guests — human and animal alike — has always been our priority. And while being one of the oldest continually inhabited houses in the country brings its challenges, we’re committed to making meaningful changes now to help protect the world we pass on.

💚 Small actions. Real impact.

We’re looking for new Trustees – could that be you? ✨

At Charney Manor, we’re proud of our rich history and peaceful setting—but our future depends on passionate people who care about what we do.

We’re currently seeking new Trustees to join our team. And you don’t need to be of the Quaker faith—just share a love for Charney Manor as much as we do. ❤️

Whether you bring experience in finance, governance, community work, or simply enthusiasm and fresh perspective, your contribution could make a real difference.

What would your next retreat feel like—if you had the right space around you?

At Charney Manor, we host a wide range of retreats—each shaped by the people leading them.

Some come to write. Some to reflect. Some to learn, share ideas, or simply step away from the everyday.

What they have in common is the need for a setting that supports both focus and connection.

That’s what we aim to provide:
a calm, characterful place where your retreat can unfold naturally.

📩 If you’re planning a retreat, we’d be glad to help you shape it—get in touch to explore dates and options.

This morning’s sunrise wasn’t just for the neighbouring sheep — though they do enjoy a front-row seat 🐑🌅

Our guests get to share it too: soft light over open fields, and a stillness that’s hard to come by.

A rather special way to start the day at Charney Manor.
