It is with great sadness that we have had to close the Hind Hotel yesterday. After 8½ years of ownership, and with £1.3m spent on a massive external refurbishment (in partnership with Wellingborough Borough Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund - our company funding £350k), a £600k refurbishment of bedrooms and circulation space, and over £300k spent on modernising the ground floor public areas and replacing old equipment throughout the hotel. We took on a dilapidated building, with bedrooms stuck in a 1990s time warp and equipment throughout the hotel on the brink of collapse.

The director would like to thank the team for their dedication when faced with adversity such as the main refurbishment contractor going bust 3 months into the 24 month refurbishment, and their resilience in the wave of shocks such as covid and the current economic downturn.

The company has faced serious hardship with respect to rising costs, reduced town centre footfall and government policy often seemingly targeting the hospitality industry. Throw in increased regulation, rising national insurance and decreasing flexibility in the labour market and a currently stressed economic environment, and the director has been forced to concede that he can no longer continue financially supporting the business. He has never made one penny from the company, put in personal funds of close to £1m, and has dedicated thousands of hours unpaid to managing the company and the refurbishments. He feels privileged to have owned such a beautiful building for what has been too short a period of time but thr time has come for new hands.

With all that said, the hotel is physically in better shape than for 30 years or maybe longer. A new owner will be found who can reap the benefits of the hard work that has been put in - and who will no doubt put their own flourish and finishing touches to a 90% complete project. We have no doubt the hotel will re-open in the not too distant future and will once again be the centrepiece of the town.

All that remains is for us to thank the town for the patronage over the years, and to hope that when a new owner takes over you show them the love that we have felt over the last 8½ years.
The outgoing Team Hind

The Hind Hotel, Wellingborough: History, Heritage, and Haunting

Standing proudly on the Market Square in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, The Hind Hotel is one of the town’s most architecturally and historically significant buildings. Its striking 17th-century façade and centuries-old traditions of hospitality are matched only by its enduring reputation for hauntings and unexplained activity.

Architectural and Historical Background

The Hind Hotel was built between 1645 and 1648 by Sir Christopher Hatton, a key figure in the town’s development. Constructed from local limestone, the hotel features ornate stonework, mullioned windows, and a grand entrance that reflects the prosperity and status of its original patrons.

The hotel’s historical significance is closely linked to the English Civil War (1642–1651). King Charles I is believed to have stayed at a former hostelry on this site, and the hotel itself later became a strategic meeting place. Officers loyal to the Crown and Parliament soldiers alike are said to have passed through its doors during turbulent times.

Over the centuries, The Hind Hotel has welcomed travellers, dignitaries, performers, and even royalty. In the Victorian era, it thrived as a fashionable coaching inn, serving those journeying between London and the Midlands. Today, it remains a beloved landmark — a living piece of Wellingborough’s past.

A Legacy of the Supernatural

With such a rich and often dramatic history, it is little wonder that The Hind Hotel has become synonymous with ghost stories. Guests and staff continue to report strange experiences, leading many to believe that spirits from different eras remain tethered to the building.

The Lady in Blue

The most frequently seen apparition, the Lady in Blue, has been spotted drifting silently through the upper floors and stairways. She is sometimes seen adjusting her dress or appearing in old-fashioned mirrors before vanishing without a trace. Witnesses describe a calm but sorrowful energy surrounding her — as though she is still waiting for someone long gone.

The Civil War Soldier

As a former hub for wartime strategists and officers, the hotel’s Civil War history lives on in spectral form. A soldier dressed in 17th-century military attire has been seen pacing corridors and standing guard near doorways. His presence often precedes sudden drops in temperature and an oppressive stillness in the air.

Additional Paranormal Reports

These well-known figures are just the beginning. The hotel’s ghostly population appears far larger.

The Woman in White

Distinct from the Lady in Blue, the Woman in White is linked to tales of heartbreak. Seen near the grand staircase or beside guest beds at night, her silent sorrow has unnerved many a visitor. Cold spots and feelings of overwhelming sadness often accompany her appearances.

The Hooded Monk

The land is believed to once have religious significance, potentially connected to travelling clergy. A hooded monk, face hidden beneath his cowl, has been spotted in the basement and lower corridors. He is thought to move between the physical hotel and a long-lost place of worship beyond the boundaries of the living.

A lingering scent of incense is often detected moments after he fades away.

Ghostly Children
Perhaps the most chilling reports involve unseen young occupants of the hotel:
• Laughter echoing in empty corridors
• Small footsteps racing along the floors after midnight
• Doors rattling as though pulled by tiny hands
• Shadowy figures the size of children darting past open doorways

On rare occasions, guests have awakened to a small child standing by the bed — only to see them dissolve before their eyes.

Mysterious Sounds and Vanishing Figures
Employees have told of:
• Disembodied voices whispering their names
• Service bells ringing despite being disconnected
• Spectral silhouettes appearing near the bar, visible only for a heartbeat

One long-serving staff member reported encountering a well-dressed Victorian gentleman who disappeared the moment she turned to speak.
