Our fifth Island Hootenanny, and this one’s bringing some great musicians — Joanna Eden, vocal mentor to samsmith, and Derek Nash, saxophonist with the Jools Holland Rhythm & Blues Orchestra, joining the Chris Ingham Trio for the night.

Jazz over dinner, then soul and Motown once the dancing shoes come out, island punch in hand from the moment you arrive.

Thursday’s Quiz Night has had a tune-up.

• Fiver Hours now runs till 7.30pm

• kitchen open from 5.30pm, last food orders at 7pm, quiz kicking off 7.45/8.

• keeping it quick and simple on the food side — House Menu (2/£20, 3/£25) and Casual Menu (mussels, pasta, burger and ploughman’s).

• plenty of bar snacks and table service for drinks.

Same £2.50 in for charity as always. Come for food and drinks, stay for the argument about capital cities.

Autumn is upon us and so too delicious, comforting new dishes on our menu.

Mussel rarebit with dill velouté and apple piccalilli; smoked ricotta lasagne with pickled walnut and chanterelle mushroom to start; guinea fowl Kiev with black garlic butter, and skate wing with saffron risotto, among the mains; a new Essex ploughman’s for two; and a chocolate delice with orange liqueur cream to finish.

Back by popular demand (yours, mostly — you keep booking it out), Friday Night Jazz returns with the Denny Ilett Trio. Guitarist Magazine called him “a knock-out player… soulful and jazz-tinged,” which is one of those reviews that does the work for you.

A fantastic evening of top quality live jazz with delicious food and drinks, in a lovely, convivial atmosphere. Come for dinner and stay for the music, or just come for the music and let dinner be someone else’s decision that night – either works. Music runs roughly 7.30pm to 9.45pm, tickets £10.50pp (payable on booking, non-refundable, the usual small print). A shortened five/five/five menu at normal prices, one course or three, or just drinks, your call.

We love our pocket of Mersea Island.

St Peter and St Paul’s Church, standing quietly at the heart of the village and next door, Arthur C**k, the butcher, doing his own kind of Sunday service.

Lose yourself finding something beautiful at the Oyster Gallery or .4_mersea. Eat too at , cakes , coffee for calm.

L O B S T E R R O L L

Summer means Lobster Roll for us. Each year Ed ups the deliciousness and this year is no different. East coast lobster gently poached. The shells are then made into a deeply rich bisque before being reduced and added to a house made mayonnaise.

Served in a daily made brioche bun, soft & sweet and finished with crisp onions & fried sage. A side of fries and a glass of exuberant rosato, this may sound like an M&S ad but it’s real and it’s heaven and made with love for you.
