Our Story

In early 1855, work on the new railway station began and was completed in 1857. Close by, a magnificent custom-built hotel was also under construction and would be the jewel at the centre of Victoria Terrace. As the foundations (dug down below sea-level) were being laid the structure was referred to as the Railway Hotel – a fine link with future prosperity. However, when the project was complete, the builder – Philip Dodson – dedicated the Hotel to his friend and close business associate – William Wharton Burdon – the proprietor of the gas works and coal stores in the town. The Burdon Hotel, also known as the Imperial Burdon Hotel, first opened its doors in August, 1858. The building was a triumph of Victorian Technology designed, by the architect Pierse Arthur, to blend seamlessly with the Georgian style of the Terrace.

During the First World War the Burdon Hotel was used as a military hospital. In World War II, Weymouth played an important role in the Normandy Landings as thousands of British and American troops used Weymouth and Portland as embarkation ports. 517,816 troops and 144,093 vehicles embarked from Weymouth between 6th June and 7th May, 1945.

In 1971 the Burdon Hotel changed it name to the Hotel Prince Regent. This change reflected Weymouth’s historic royal connections. King George III and Queen Charlotte spent 14 extended holidays in Weymouth, between 1789 and 1805, and their patronage benefited the town enormously. Their first son, Prince George, became Prince Regent and assumed the duties of his father, George III, between 1810 and 1820 when he suffered bouts of insanity (“the Madness of King George”) before becoming King George IV.

In 2014 the Hotel Prince Regent joined the Daish's Holidays family. With a lot of love and care we have worked hard to restore the hotel to it’s former glory and in 2017 it was awarded its first “Tripadvisor Certificate of Excellence”.
