Burma veteran, 101, moves Weymouth audience with song and harmonica performance

A chance photograph taken during Weymouth’s Armed Forces Day parade has led to the discovery of a remarkable veteran whose story has touched hearts across the town.

George, a 101-year-old Burma Star recipient who was holidaying in Weymouth with his family, became the focus of attention after organisers posted his photograph on social media following Sunday’s parade. The post prompted people to identify him as a veteran of the Burma Campaign during the Second World War.

The family had been unaware of the town’s Armed Forces celebrations but, after learning about the parade, asked whether George could take part. Organisers said the answer was a resounding yes.

Earlier this week, George and his family visited The Veterans Hub Community Café, where staff and visitors were able to learn more about his wartime service and the unit with which he served.

George fought as part of the British-led 14th Army, often referred to as the “Forgotten Army”, which played a pivotal role in the Burma Campaign between 1942 and 1945. Under the command of Lieutenant General William Slim, the 14th Army helped halt Japanese advances and reclaim Burma, fighting in some of the world’s most challenging jungle conditions.

During the visit, George entertained those present by singing a song he had once performed for Dame Vera Lynn in 1942 before playing a cherished harmonica he bought at Clapham Junction in 1936.

The emotional performance left a lasting impression on those gathered, with organisers saying there was “not a dry eye in the house”.

George, who will celebrate his 102nd birthday in just 12 days, was also asked the secret to a long life. His answer drew smiles all round: “Women.”

The Veterans Hub thanked George for his service and wished him a very happy birthday.
