🐦 Something to tweet about in Weymouth!

A few weeks ago, we shared the wonderful marine-themed artwork transforming one of Weymouth’s underpasses.

Well, it would be remiss of us not to share its feathered neighbour, now that it’s complete!

From robins and blue t**s to magpies and birds in flight, the detail and colour in these murals are simply fantastic.

What a wonderful project, transforming two walkways into something really rather special.

We think both tunnels look fabulous and are a lovely addition to Weymouth. A huge well done to everyone involved! 👏

Full credit to the incredibly talented artists Peter Sheridan and Wayne Barker for creating such wonderful artwork and bringing a splash of colour to Weymouth!

Have you ever noticed the faces on the buildings in Gloucester Street? 👀

We recently heard a fascinating bit of Weymouth folklore about them.

The story goes that they date back to Weymouth’s royal days, when runners working for the King were sent around town with messages and errands. As some couldn’t read, they were supposedly directed to the right house by the face carved outside it.

Great story, isn’t it?

There’s just one problem… we’re not convinced it’s true.

We’ve been doing a little digging and, so far, the dates don’t quite seem to add up. George III’s famous visits to Weymouth were at the end of the 1700s and beginning of the 1800s, while the buildings with these particular faces appear to have come later.

So where did the story come from? And why are there faces staring out over Gloucester Street?

We’re going to take a closer look.

One of the things we love about being here at The Gresham is just how much history there is within a short walk of our front door, including the occasional mystery.

Does anyone local know this story, or remember being told a different version of it?

Dusk til Dark has arrived in Weymouth ✨

We popped down on the first evening to see Wave by Squidsoup lighting up Westham Bridge, and it’s rather spectacular.

Made up of 500 suspended glowing orbs, the installation creates a wave of changing light and sound that you can walk right underneath.

If you’re in Weymouth this weekend, it’s well worth an evening wander. Wave is running from 6pm–10pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday as part of this year’s Dusk til Dark.

A little escape into the green 🌿

If you’re staying with us and fancy exploring a little more of Dorset, Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens is a beautiful place for a wander.

Winding paths, towering trees and plenty of peaceful corners to disappear into for a while.
