Famous Whitby whale bones to be removed in September ahead of bronze replacement in 2027. 🐋

One of Whitby’s most recognisable landmarks is set to enter a new chapter, with plans confirmed to replace the famous whale bone arch on West Cliff with a bronze replica.

The current bones were installed in 2002 after being gifted to Whitby by its twin town of Barrow, Alaska. However, more than two decades of exposure to harsh coastal weather have caused significant deterioration, meaning the structure now needs to be replaced.

Following a review of the available options and feedback from residents and visitors, a bronze arch has been chosen as the best long-term solution.

The new £70,000 structure will match the appearance and scale of the existing bones while being strong enough to withstand Whitby’s challenging seaside conditions for many years.

The current arch will be carefully removed in September 2026 so moulds can be created and a bespoke internal framework manufactured. The bronze replacement is expected to be installed in early 2027.

Over time, the bronze will develop a natural patina while retaining the distinctive shape that has framed views of Whitby Abbey and appeared in countless holiday photographs.

The existing bones will not be discarded. Following their removal, they will be gifted to the University of York for academic and educational research, while a section will remain in Whitby and go on display at Whitby Museum.

How many of you have been to Sandsend?? There's a fabulous beach with fossils and caves that connects to Whitby, delicious Fish Tacos at the Fish Cottage, and amazing sunsets 🌞

It's a short drive or manageable walk from Whitby, the beach is beautiful and usually quieter than Whitby's main West Cliff Beach.

There are plenty of places for refreshments including The Hart Inn, Sandside Cafe, Mary's Sandwich Shop and Fish Cottage.

It's an underrated gem that's a wonderful alternative to the busier streets and beaches of Whitby when the sun is shining.
