After a brilliant, super busy spring bank holiday week we suddenly find ourselves alone in the fields.
Its a glorious afternoon so what else to do but grab the dogs and a couple of beers and head down there ourselves!
Ed's had a nap, Lenny and Olive have had a marvellous time chasing each other and sniffing all the things, and I've been just sitting quietly listening to the birds. Marvellous.
Thanks to everyone who came to see us this week - its been an absolute pleasure to have you all in the fields. More lovely folks coming to see us this week but for now we're enjoying having it all to ourselves, however briefly.
If you'd like to join us we still have a small amount of June availability - link in bio to book.

What a lovely couple of weeks of guests we've had to stay!
Each of our camps has a guest book for people to write in - we encourage people to be creative and draw or write poems (grown ups too please!).
Very happy to have received both pictures and a poem this week! As well as some smashing feedback. Scroll across for a lovely poem our Outpost guests left.
Thanks gang - we love our guests! ❤️

Well its an absolutely glorious day in the fields and we're as full as we can be, so I'm having a moment sat in the sun doing a bit of scrolling of other cool places to stay - as you do.
Gosh lots of glamping places look amazing! But one thing I've noticed is that their tents or whatever are often super close together. Now maybe I've just got antisocial in my old age, but the idea here was always that you wouldn't be able to see the other camps from your camp. So you would really feel like it was just you, your gang, in the middle of nowhere.
We've done that so much so that its reeeally hard to take a picture to show you! So here are three attemps, first one from this morning.
What that means on a day like today is we've got big kids and small kids, friendly dogs and slightly grumpy dogs, grown ups and small people all down the fields hanging out and having their own adventures without needing to see each other.
We've just started work on a brand new camp and this one too is totally hidden from the others.
So you might not get a hot tub when you stay here but you do get a piece of wild all to yourself. And I'm very proud of that.

Yesterday was World Bee Day, and you know if I was any good at this social media lark I'd have been on point and said this yesterday. But hey ho the bees don't know what day it is!
This is a bee enjoying the nectar on an apple tree we planted the first year we were here as a tiny little maiden. Here it is on the second photo - isn't it a beauty covered in glorious blush pink blossom? I can't quite get across quite how satisfying it is to see - as I've learnt tree planting is a delayed pleasure - you have to be in it for the long game and its taken 6 years to get to this point where I can admire the bees enjoying the nectar and look forward to apples in the Autumn.
This winter with help from the lovely people at we planted another 20 old fashioned fruit trees to expand our tiny orchard. These are all trees that would have been in a traditional Yorkshire farm orchard and there are apples, pears, plums, cherries and damsons.
Fruit trees of course are not the only source of nectar and our giant craggy old hawthorn hedges are currently providing much needed blossom now the fruit trees have finished and before the brambles get going.
Nigel our lovely bee man keeps hives behind the big holly hedge and makes honey which we sell in our tiny honesty shop. You can see both the apple trees and the bees from the shop and if that doesn't make you happy as you spread your honey on your toast then you're a tougher soul than me.

Hello to all our new followers! 👋 lovely to have you with us!
Thought I'd better take this opportunity to reintroduce ourselves, and tell you a little bit about who we are.
We're Verity and Ed and we run Coast and Camplight - a completely off-grid glamping escape just outside Whitby. We built the whole thing from scratch ourselves mainly using things that are recycled, upcycled and or that we found in a shed.
We have 3 safari tents and one bell tent (currently! Watch this space..) which all have their own unique themes and style.
We're mad about nature and trying our best to create a place where people and nature can live in harmony - we're rewilding the site and we've been doing lots of projects to help nature return.
We live here with a bunch of rescue creatures who are usually in the back of every picture!
So expect bit of building and making, some dog chat, lots of nature ramblings, barn owl spam and the odd lovely pint in Whitby or Robin Hoods Bay.
We'd love to hear from you and who you are and how you found us?

Well this is very lovely - thanks so much to The Whitby Guide for the super nice write up!

Switch off, slow down and sleep under canvas near Whitby. 🌿

For anyone craving a proper escape from the everyday, Coast and Camplight offers off-grid glamping between Whitby and Robin Hood’s Bay, right in the heart of the North York Moors National Park.

Set on a family farm with views towards Whitby Abbey and the sea beyond, this peaceful site is all about getting back to nature without giving up the little comforts. Think secluded bell tents and safari tents, comfy beds, luxury bedding, hot showers, fluffy towels, cold drinks in the fridge and campfires for sunset marshmallows.

There’s no Wi-Fi, very little phone signal and no trace of the modern world from your deck chair, which is exactly the point. Instead, you’ll find rewilded fields, ancient woodland, wildflowers, a beck, nature ponds and plenty of wildlife, from barn owls and deer to bats and birds.

Cars are left at the gate to help protect the setting, with wheelbarrows used to carry your kit to camp. It all adds to the feeling of stepping into somewhere quieter, wilder and wonderfully away from it all.

Coast and Camplight is only a 10-minute drive from Whitby or Robin Hood’s Bay, and about a mile from two dog-friendly pubs. It’s perfect for digital detox weekends, slow coastal adventures, and evenings by the fire.

This is off-grid, eco-friendly glamping that truly feels connected to its surroundings.

Nature and new life always finds a way.
The longer I'm here the more I start to understand the sheer resilience of nature. These photos might need you to squint to see but their story is worth telling.
The first is an old oak stump. Fallen many years ago. So long ago that bluebells have grown within it. However, this year you can just see it has new oak sprigs growing from it! Is this a thing? Can a new oak tree really rise from the ashes of an old one? I'm overjoyed to find it might.
On the second an oak that fell when we first arrived here 6 years ago. We were immensely sad to lose this giant, but the light it has let into the canopy has brought new flowers to the woodland floor and new saplings in her wake. And this year a tiny oak sapling grows on the shadow of the old.
A fallen alder at Writers Retreat, fallen for many years now has not one but three new trees starting life on the old. If you look closely an alder, a hawthorn and an ash are starting their lives anew.
And on the fallen trees in the jurassic bit of the woods (called that because its so easy to imagine a dinosaur emerging from the greenery!) no end of tiny species are making the fallen trees their home.
Nature never fails to amaze me, and watching this tiny part of the world as it moves so slowly through its lifecycle is what keeps me sane in this crazy world. If you do one thing for your mental health today its go out and be in nature.

Always lovely to see our friends in the fields, and last weekend we had some brilliant fun with the fabulous , and lovely Evie.
There was fun in the fields with campfires and cosying in by the fire until the stars came out. We sat at the outdoor table and made art - kids and grown ups! We took wine on an adventure through the woods and played on the secret swings, and messed about in hammocks. Chickens were fed and Lenny was even promoted to cuddles in the carpark dog (oh Len I'm so proud of you!).
So lovely to see you ladies and thanks for letting me share your photos. Come and see us again soon!
