Seashell Cottage is just off the left of this picture, right in the heart of the old town and a perfect location for easily accessing the locations of this amazing Lit Festival. As an avid reader the sitting room has been set up with cosy spots with excellent over the shoulder lighting to enjoy your favourite books.

The Whitby Lit Festival is officially back this November, and the 2026 line-up is already looking like something special. 📚

After a standout debut year, the festival is coming back to the coast with an exciting first group of authors. Confirmed guests include crime writer Ann Cleeves, bestselling author Joanne Harris, broadcaster and psychologist Dr Sian Williams, and thriller writer Mark Billingham.

The early programme offers gripping crime series, bestselling novels, and thoughtful talks on mental health. It promises a mix of familiar voices and new perspectives, with more names to be announced soon.

In true Whitby style, the festival keeps its unique charm by hosting events inside the fish and chip restaurant Hetty and Betty.

After a very popular first year, organisers are planning an even bigger and more diverse programme for 2026. Whitby is building its reputation as a must-visit place for book lovers in the UK.

A visit to carry out a few changes and maintenance details, stock the cupboard, clean the paving, plant up the pots and prepare the cottage for the coming season. The March weather gave us some cold but beautiful days with blue skies and the occasional short showers. Nothing that stopped the walks to the close by shops, beach and harbour.
Then a gentle evening wind down sitting in the cosy reading nook with a good book and a drink.…Perfect!

For various reasons posts for Seashell Cottage have been few and far between but pictures have been taken. Before it is too far away, here are a few pictures taken in mid December when the cottage was prepared for guests over the holiday period.

Seashell Cottage ready for Christmas. Decoration sorted and Christmas tree dressed. Whitby Christmas lights up too reflecting in the harbour. Perfect!

A few shots taken while in Whitby for a couple of days to set up the Christmas tree and decorations at Seashell Cottage. It doesn’t matter the season, Whitby always pleases the eye. The sunrise on day 2 was startling and worth the dash to both ends of McLacklins Yard to get the pictures. No filter or editing!

***We’ve released 8 days in June for someone to snap up some time in glorious Whitby. 8th to 15th was reserved for some electrical work but no longer needed. *** with the pots in the private garden restocked with flowering plants, the blossom out, the sun has shining, new fairy festoon lights for the warmer evenings and new comfier chairs…….I think we’ve finished! Time to sit out and enjoy it.
