🎂 Happy Birthday to the other half of Summerfield ❤️

Summerfield has been part of Ben’s life for a lot longer than it’s been our business.

He grew up here when it was his family farm, so we’re not sure he ever imagined that years later it would become home to our own little family, two Labradors and five accessible holiday properties 😂

A lot has changed over the years, but that history is a huge part of what makes Summerfield what it is today. It’s not just our business, it’s our home, and for Ben it’s been home in one way or another for most of his life.

Over the last five years we’ve built, renovated, painted, landscaped, changed things, changed them again, added more equipment, tackled endless lists and had plenty of “u oh, Ben’s had an idea…” moments that usually result in considerably more work than first expected 😂

Freedom Lodge probably being the biggest project of them all lately!!

We always say Summerfield is very much a family business, and it really is. So much of what you see when you come and stay has been created by the two of us, usually with the boys and dogs somewhere in the middle of it all.

Today though, hopefully the tools are staying down and the never-ending Summerfield list can wait.

Happy Birthday Ben ❤️

From all of us, and the family farm that apparently still hasn’t finished finding jobs for you!

Anyone else very much in the last two weeks of the school holidays survival stage? 😂

August seems to have disappeared in a blur here. The cottages are busy, we’ve had multiple changeovers, mountains of washing, a new shower chair delivery, admin work squeezed into whatever gaps we can find, Coastguard callouts thrown into the mix, cricket matches, bike races and two boys who are still very much on their summer holidays and would quite like us to entertain them occasionally!

So today there’s no beautifully planned post or big update from us. We’re just here, keeping everything ticking over, getting cottages ready, welcoming guests, sorting life and occasionally wondering what day it is 😂

It’s probably quite a good little glimpse of what summer at Summerfield actually looks like behind the scenes.

We’re always incredibly grateful to be this busy and to have the cottages full of families enjoying their holidays. But we’d be lying if we said we weren’t also starting to look forward to that first quiet cup of tea when the school gates reopen in September!

Until then… we’ll keep muddling through the summer holiday madness with everyone else 😂

See you all on the other side (or come and see us for Autumn, it’s beautiful, really 😉🍁)

5,4,3,2,1…

This week we took delivery of our 5th tilt in space shower chair and commode 😊

It made us think back to when we first bought one. At the time it was something we had available if somebody needed it, and we certainly didn’t imagine that a few years later we’d be at the point where we practically need one permanently in every property!

But here we are… number five has arrived.

Over the years we’ve just kept adding equipment as we’ve learnt more, listened to our guests and understood what people actually need when they come away.

So it seemed like a good excuse for a little reminder of just how much equipment we now have available at Summerfield.

We have:

☀️5 tilt-in-space shower chairs and commodes
☀️Large paediatric Seahorse shower chair
☀️Bariatric shower chair
☀️Static shower and perch chairs
☀️Ceiling track hoists in Albany, Scoresby, Cholmley and Freedom Lodge
☀️Mobile hoists in all properties
☀️Profiling beds in all five properties
☀️Bariatric profiling bed (Albany only)
☀️Rise and recline chairs, in every property, including a bariatric one
☀️2 hydraulic shower trolleys (scoresby and freedom lodge)
☀️Sara Stedy
☀️Atlas Advance standing aid
☀️Raised toilets, grab handles, lowering side bars and lots of the smaller bits and pieces that can make life easier too

Some of it stays in particular properties and other equipment can be moved around depending on who is coming to stay and what they need.

We definitely didn’t start with all of this! It’s been built up bit by bit over the last five years, usually because someone has needed something and we’ve thought, right, that’s something else we need to have here.

And I think that’s probably the nicest thing about seeing chair number five arrive today.

We started with one because it might be needed.

Now we need five because they are. 💛

If you’d like to enquire about an accessible stay with us with all of this equipment available at NO extra cost- contact us through our website today ⬇️ https://www.summerfieldfarm.co.uk/contact

🎉Five today 🎉

Our youngest, Angus, arrived just two weeks after we took over Summerfield, so his birthday always makes me think about how long we’ve been here too.

He’s never known life without guests coming and going, beds being made, equipment needing serviced, recycling bins needing jumped in and a million jobs needing done, dogs under everyone’s feet and usually some sort of chaos going on!

So many of our returning guests have watched him grow from a tiny newborn into the funny, determined little boy he is now. Five years has gone ridiculously fast.

Happy 5th birthday Angus 🤍

Our Summerfield baby, who really isn’t much of a baby anymore!

Autumn at Summerfield 🍂

How are we talking about Autumn already?! It feels like the summer holidays have only just started, although judging by the amount of washing, children, dogs and general chaos around here at the moment, maybe not. 😂

But September really isn’t far away now, and it’s actually one of our favourite times of year in Whitby.

Things calm down just a little. The beaches and paths are quieter, and the late summer sunsets are stunning.

So if you’ve been thinking about getting away once the main summer rush is over, it’s definitely worth starting to have a look now.

💛And we finally have our new professional photos of Freedom Lodge to share too.

Freedom Lodge is our newest accessible property, sleeping up to 6 and all on one level.

We’ve packed a lot into it, a profiling bed, ceiling track hoist from the bedroom into the wetroom, mobile hoist, hydraulic shower trolley, tilt-in-space shower chair, rise and recline seating and, most importantly, plenty of room to actually come away and enjoy a holiday together. We also welcome dogs 🐾

Then there’s the veranda and that view over towards Whitby Abbey and the sea. I think that might be my favourite bit.

We do still have some availability for September and into autumn, both in Freedom Lodge and across our other cottages.

⁉️Did you know- There are FIVE accessible properties here at Summerfield altogether, and they’re all a little bit different. Different layouts, some slightly different equipment and different levels of access, because we know there really isn’t one version of “accessible” that works for everybody.

So please just ask us.

Tell us what you need, what matters to your family, what equipment you use at home or even what you’re worried about when going away. We know these cottages inside out and we can normally help work out which one is going to suit you best.

These photos have been taken throughout changeovers while we’ve been flying around with summer chaos, so Freedom Lodge can have the limelight today.

A huge thank you to Your360: Immersive Virtual Tours for our photos and the tours for ALL properties will be on the website soon too.

And if you’re thinking about September or an autumn break, now is a good time to get in touch.⬇️

🤔One of our guests said something this weekend that really made me smile.

“It’s amazing how different Summerfield is compared to five years ago.”

It was such a lovely thing to hear.

When you’re here every day, you don’t really see it. You’re onto the next job, the next improvement, the next turnaround, and you forget to stop and look back.

🎂It also made me realise that in just a few weeks it’ll be Angus’s birthday, and with it five years since we took on Summerfield. Somehow those two milestones have always gone hand in hand.

Five years has brought a new accessible lodge, more specialist equipment, improvements to every property, lots of paintbrushes, muddy boots, late nights, plenty of BBQs in the gardens… and, most importantly, lots of families making memories together.

One thing hasn’t changed though…

From the very beginning, we wanted Summerfield to be somewhere everyone could enjoy a holiday together. Somewhere accessibility isn’t something you have to ask for or compromise on, it’s simply part of everyday life. A place where grandparents, children, wheelchair users, carers, dogs… everyone can be together, whether that’s heading to the beach, exploring the cinder track, sitting in the garden with a BBQ on, or simply enjoying time as a family.

And just like our boys have grown up here, Summerfield has grown too.

To everyone who’s been part of that journey, whether you’ve visited once or dozens of times, thank you. We really do appreciate every single one of you. ❤️

Happy Friday everyone 💛

We’re still enjoying a few days away with the boys and making the most of some family time together.

While we’re away, Summerfield is very much business as usual. Our brilliant team are looking after everything on site, all of our guests have our usual contact and emergency information, with someone on site and we’re never far away if we’re needed.

It’s not often we properly switch off, so we’re making the most of this time together before another busy few months ahead.

Thank you, as always, for supporting our little family business. It really does mean a lot to us.

We hope you all have a lovely weekend!

💛 Wednesday Whys

Why do we always ask for feedback?

It’s not because we’re chasing five star reviews.

And it’s definitely not because we think we’ve got everything right.

It’s because, even after all these years, we’re still learning.

When we first started Summerfield, we had ideas about what would make a holiday easier for families with additional needs. Some came from my own background in care, others from lots of research and talking to people.

But the biggest lessons haven’t come from books or plans.

They’ve come from our guests.

So many of the things you’ll now find across our cottages started with a simple conversation.

“Have you ever thought about…?”

“This worked really well, but…”

“It would have made such a difference if…”

Sometimes it’s led to a new piece of equipment. Sometimes we’ve changed the layout of a room, or the way we do something behind the scenes. Sometimes it’s been something really small that has made a huge difference to the next family.

I don’t think we’ll ever get to a point where we say, “That’s it, we’re finished.”

Accessibility doesn’t stand still, and neither do we.

So if we ask how your stay was, or if there was anything we could have done differently, we genuinely want to know.

Not because we’re looking for praise.

Because every conversation helps us make Summerfield a little bit better for the next family that walks through the door.

And for everyone who has taken the time to share an idea with us over the years… thank you. You’ve helped shape Summerfield far more than you’ll probably ever realise.

💛 If there’s something you’ve wanted to ask about Summerfield, let us know in the comments below ⬇️ It might just become a future Wednesday Why.

💭Weekend thoughts..

Summerfield has never really just been about the cottages.

It’s always been about people.

Most weekends (and plenty of weekdays!) are a bit of a juggle. There are guests arriving, cottages to prepare, washing to fold, grass to cut, messages to answer, equipment to check and place and the endless list of little (and sometimes big) jobs that come with running a place like this.

Then there’s everything else that makes up our life.

Ben spends a huge amount of his time working for our community. With Esk Valley Travel, helping make the outdoors more accessible through adapted cycling and campaigning for better accessible walking and cycling routes. He also coaches disability climbing and somehow still manages to fit in being Chairman at the cricket club.

Kara volunteers with Whitby Coastguard, where plans can change in a heartbeat if the pager goes, as well as keeping things running around here and her own climbing work.

And then there are our boys.

They’re still young, but they’re growing up knowing that everyone mucks in. They help with little jobs around the cottages, they know that looking after guests matters, and they’re learning that if you can help someone, you should. We hope they’re seeing that community isn’t just something you talk about, it’s something you do.

People sometimes ask how we fit it all together.

The truth is, we don’t really think about it. This is just our life.

Summerfield has grown alongside all of those things. The accessible holidays, the volunteering, the community projects, the sport, the family… they’re all part of the same picture.

So when you stay with us, you’re not just booking a cottage. You’re supporting a family who genuinely cares about people, our community and making the outdoors and holidays a little easier for everyone to enjoy.

Thank you for following along, for sharing our posts, for coming back year after year and for recommending us to others.

We never take any of it for granted. ❤️

If you fancy visiting us this summer last minute, or a cosy Autumn short stay, have a little browse on our website, we’re always happy to help with any questions 💛 https://www.summerfieldfarm.co.uk/

❓Every now and then we realise we’ve forgotten to tell our own story.

Over the past few weeks we’ve seen lots of conversations about accessible places to stay in Whitby, which is fantastic, but many still are one room, limited bathroom facilities and no hoist options.

It reminded us that many people still don’t know Summerfield exists, we’re still building our platform and getting the word out there!

If accessibility is something your family depends on, we’d love to introduce ourselves.

At Summerfield Farm Holidays, accessibility has never been an add on. It’s been at the heart of what we’ve done from day one.

Today we have 🌟five accessible🌟holiday properties, including our newly refurbished Freedom Lodge, giving families a choice of different spaces because every guest’s needs are different too.

Here’s what you’ll find at Summerfield…

✨ Step-free, level access that works in everyday life
🚗 Parking right outside your door
🌿 Gardens and outdoor space to enjoy
🏡 Five different properties, each with their own layout and equipment
🛠️ Specialist equipment included as standard, not charged as an extra
🔧 Equipment that’s regularly serviced, checked and maintained
🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒 Family friendly, dog friendly, carer friendly sleeping up to 6 people

From ceiling track hoists and profiling beds, to Sara Stedy and Atlas stand aids, mobile hoists, paediatric seating and hydraulic shower trolleys, it’s equipment we know well because we’ve worked with it and supported families using it for many years.

Between us, Ben and Kara bring backgrounds in SEND education, outdoor instruction, social work, hands on care and climbing in adaptive environments. That experience shapes so many of the decisions we’ve made here.

If we recommend something or tell you it’ll work, it’s because we’ve seen it in real life, not just read it in a brochure.

Your stay doesn’t stop when you arrive either.

Over the years we’ve built some fantastic relationships with local organisations to help make visiting Whitby that bit easier.

💛 Whitby beach access with Whitby, Scarborough and Ryedale Disability Action Group(Disabled Action Group)
💛 Trips out with Wetwheels Yorkshire
💛 Our own collection of recommendations for accessible cafés, days out, routes and places to visit, all built from experience and ready for guests to use.

We know planning an accessible holiday can come with lots of questions.

Will the equipment be suitable?

Will there be enough space?

Will it actually work for us?

Those are exactly the conversations we’re happy to have, because every family is different.

We’ve shared a few photos today to give you a look around some of our accessible accommodation, including Freedom Lodge. They only show a small part of what we offer, but hopefully they’ll give you a feel for what Summerfield is all about.

If this is the first time you’ve come across Summerfield, welcome. We’re really glad you’ve found us.

Whether you’re planning a holiday now or simply gathering ideas for the future, we’re always happy to chat, answer questions or point you in the right direction.
