Oh how quickly things can change…

A week ago, some of our late summer dates in Freedom Lodge disappeared from the diary when a guest booked a longer stay whilst waiting for suitable accessible housing. With this booking, we told you we were full in Freedom lodge until October.

We’re delighted to say they’ve now secured the accessible accommodation they needed, which is wonderful news and exactly the outcome everyone was hoping for long term.

The knock on effect for us is that some August and September availability has reappeared in Freedom Lodge that we didn’t expect to have in the lodge (and afew limited accessible cottage stays left)

So, if you’ve been considering an accessible break on the Yorkshire Coast, now might be a good time to take another look.

😮‍💨Honesty post alert!

Running a small holiday business isn’t always sunsets, cosy cottages and happy holiday photos.

Sometimes it’s a phone call to say the boiler in Albany Cottage has decided it’s had enough of life.

And sometimes that boiler then takes the kitchen and living room floor down with it.

Which is exactly what happened this week.

If you’ve followed us for a while, you’ll know we’re pretty good at rolling with whatever gets thrown our way. Between holiday cottages, children, dogs, Coastguard, climbing, cottage and garden maintenance, endless admin and trying to remember who needs a swimming bag on which day, we’re fairly well practised at problem solving!

But the bit that always weighs on us most isn’t the cost or the extra work. It’s our guests.

Because we’re not just another holiday cottage.

Many of our guests spend months planning their stay. Equipment needs arranging, carers need booking, transport needs organising, families need to coordinate time off. For a lot of people, if something goes wrong, it’s not as simple as finding somewhere else for the weekend.

That’s something we never take lightly.

Thankfully, the team have worked incredibly hard this week and we’ve got through it. The silver lining? Albany now has a beautiful new floor throughout the kitchen and living area, and it really does look lovely.

It’s one of those moments that reminds us what running a small independent business is really like. The highs are brilliant. The lows can arrive without warning. And sometimes you’re standing in the middle of a cottage wondering how a boiler failure somehow turned into a flooring project!

On a much happier note, while all this has been going on, we’ve also had something pretty special happen.

Freedom Lodge, opening on 12th June, is now fully booked until early October.

Honestly, we never expected quite the response we’ve had.

Every booking, enquiry, recommendation and share genuinely means the world to us. When you’re a small family business, people choosing to spend their holidays with you is something we’re grateful for every single day.

If you’ve been thinking about a stay later this year, autumn availability is starting to fill, and Christmas and 2027 bookings are already coming in too.

🌾A little behind the scenes truth from us…

A lot of our time here isn’t actually spent doing the “holiday” looking bits.

It’s moving beds around.
Testing equipment.
Reorganising spaces.
Swapping shower chairs.
Checking hoists.
Receiving enquiries that start with:
“Which property is accessible?” And enabling us to annswer “all FIVE of them”

Because accessibility is never one size fits all.

And honestly, after years of doing this, we know how much courage it sometimes takes for families to even book a holiday in the first place, especially if previous places haven’t worked out the way they hoped.

That’s probably why the equipment side of Summerfield Farm has grown so much over the years.
Not because it looks impressive in photos…
but because real people need real things to make holidays actually possible.

So while everyone else sees cottages, sea views, log burners and Whitby sunsets…
we also see the profiling beds being made ready, the hoists checked and charged, the shower chairs lined up, and all the small details that help somebody properly relax once they arrive.

And guess what… we’re really proud of that part too!

It matters to us that people can come here and feel thought about before they even unpack 💛

A little Monday reminder from us that holidays don’t have to look perfect to be really special.

Some of our favourite reviews aren’t about fancy things at all.

They’re about grandparents being able to join in properly.
About not worrying about a wheelchair fitting through the front door.
About someone getting to use a wetroom that actually works for them.
About not having to ring round hiring equipment before a holiday.
About tired parents being able to park right outside and just… arrive.

That’s the side of Summerfield Farm we probably don’t talk about enough.

Yes, the cottages are cosy.
Yes, the views are lovely.
Yes, the dogs usually have the time of their lives here 😅 (we’re biased)

But what matters most to us is that people feel comfortable the moment they come through the door.

It’s been one of those weeks here, where it feels a bit like organised chaos… in the nicest possible way. 😅

Cottages full, guests coming and going, washing constantly on, diggers going, the boys “helping” dogs appearing from every direction

It’s been a really busy spell for us recently and we’re genuinely so grateful for all our guests and messages that have been coming in.

There’s also been loads of interest in Freedom Lodge already, even while we’re still finishing those final bits behind the scenes. We know everyone is waiting for inside photos, they’re coming, promise! Another week or two and it should start feeling much more “finished” rather than work in progress.

Right now it still looks a lot like deliveries arriving daily, us changing plans five times, standing outside discussing access in the rain, and then replying to messages in between normal life and family chaos. 😂

But it’s getting there, and we’re really excited to finally start sharing more of it properly soon.

If you’re planning a trip to Whitby this year, it’s definitely worth having a little look at dates now, especially with summer and short stays already getting busy. Ever wondered how the cottages are actually laid out?

Questions we get asked all the time is
“how does the space work?”
“where’s the accessible bedroom?”
“is there room to move around easily?”

💛 and of course you want to know, so many places claim accessibility, no step access, wetrooms big enough for chairs of all shapes and sizes, your holiday plans should be easing your mind and exciting, not causing extra anxiety wondering if it fits your needs.

We’ve popped the floor plans up so you can get a clear picture of each cottage, how the rooms flow, where everything sits, and how they might work for your stay.

Because when you’re booking somewhere (especially when accessibility really matters), it’s not just about how it looks…
it’s about how it works in real life.

You’ll see things like:

🚿Wetrooms and bathroom layouts
🦽Open living spaces vs more compact ones

✨ Decking progress… and we’re nearly there ✨

This space has been a big part of the vision for Freedom Lodge…
somewhere you can properly relax, take it all in, and just be.

The decking is now almost complete, and it’s already doing exactly what we hoped, opening everything up to those views 🌅

We’ve still got the final touches to go:
⭐️Balustrades
⭐️Glass surround

…but we’re so close now.

And just as importantly, it’s been designed with accessibility at the centre, just like everything we do here.

✔️ Level access straight from inside to outside
✔️ Plenty of space to move comfortably (no tight corners or awkward steps)
✔️ Smooth, practical surface for no step access, wheelchairs, equipment and little feet alike
✔️ Safe, enclosed feel once the glass surround is in

It’s not just about looking good… it has to work for everyone.

✨ It’s a family affair…

Mondays here are a bit of everything.

Beds being stripped and remade, fresh linen going on, equipment checked and reset ready for the next guests…
a lot of time at the laptop in between…
and somewhere in there, juggling kids’ schedules, swimming bags, and packed lunches too 😅

Today’s mostly been enquiries, messages, and getting some more bits ready to go onto the website for Freedom Lodge (which always takes longer than I think it will…)

It’s not the most exciting side of it…
but it’s the bit that makes everything else work.

Because when you arrive, it should just feel easy.
Like you don’t have to think about anything.
It’s all just… ready.

That’s always been what we’ve tried to get right 💛

And in the background of all that, Freedom Lodge is still ticking along, with our mini helpers of course!

We’ve got more of the accessible equipment arriving later this week, which feels like a bit of a milestone now ✨
I’m really looking forward to being able to show it properly once it’s all in place.
