For those of you hoping to go to the illuminated abbey this weekend, the storms have changed the plans…..

We're incredibly sorry to share that, due to the severe weather conditions associated with Storm Austen and Storm Boelo, we've had to make some changes to Whitby Abbey's opening arrangements. Illuminated Whitby Abbey is unable to go ahead tonight and this weekend. Full details below:

Friday 23rd October
• The site will be open in the daytime
• Illuminated Whitby Abbey will not take place

Saturday 24th October

• Whitby Abbey will be open during the day until 2pm.
• Illuminated Whitby Abbey will not take place.

Sunday 25th October

• Whitby Abbey will be closed all day.
• Illuminated Whitby Abbey will not take place.

This is not a decision we've taken lightly and we're hugely disappointed, especially for everyone who was looking forward to visiting this weekend. However, the safety of our visitors, staff and volunteers must always come first.

We sincerely apologise for any disappointment or inconvenience this may cause.

If you have pre-booked tickets for Illuminated Whitby Abbey, these will be automatically refunded within 10 working days and you don't need to do anything further.

We will re-access the situation on Monday morning for the week ahead and provide a further update then.

On 19th October in St. Catherine’s Hospice, surrounded by his family, Pete sadly passed away. He was a familiar face in the front bar over the years, often one half of a double act with Tex. He’ll be missed by us all. Pete didn’t want a fuss, so there won’t be a funeral, but if you want to remember him in your own time, and maybe raise a spiced rum and coke to him, pop in and share your memories.

Great to see these are coming along nicely. Like other bronze statues around the world, I can imagine these will have spots where people will rub them and create a highly polished area. Might even become the ‘Whitby Wishbone’ 🐳

If you’re planning a trip to Whitby and usually come over the moor road from Pickering, please don’t get caught out by this!

Major Whitby route to close for five days from Monday. 🚧 🚗

Motorists travelling between Whitby and Pickering are warned to plan ahead, as the busy A169 at Blue Bank will close for five days for essential maintenance work.

North Yorkshire Council has confirmed that the steep stretch of road near Sleights will be closed from Monday 19 October until Friday 23 October, affecting one of the main routes into Whitby across the North York Moors.

Here’s what drivers need to know:

📅 Dates: Monday 19 – Friday 23 October
⏰ Closure times: 9.30am – 3.30pm daily
🚧 Reason: Annual highway maintenance
🏡 Access: On-site staff will help manage access to properties and businesses within the closure.
🚶 No pedestrian access will be permitted during the works.

The road is expected to reopen outside the daily working hours, but motorists travelling to and from Whitby are advised to allow extra time and plan alternative routes.
