Sunset sies at Whiby Abbey
Founded in AD 657 by St Hild, the abbey became one of the most important religious centres in Anglo-Saxon Northumbria. It was also where the Synod of Whitby was held in 664, helping shape the future direction of the English Church. Quite a lot going on for one headland.
Then, much later, Bram Stoker arrived in Whitby, took in the ruined abbey, the town, the sea and the atmosphere, and somehow managed to make the place even more Gothic. Bit of an achievement, given it was already doing rather well on its own.
Did you know? Stoker visited Whitby in 1890, and the town helped inspire parts of Dracula, including that famous arrival on the Yorkshire coast.
