As we look forward to welcoming guest back with open (yet socially distanced!) arms, I thought I’d share this open letter from the Mayor of Whitby:
“From 4 July, with the Government’s easing of restrictions, people can travel and stay overnight away from home. This is great news for our hospitality businesses: the hotels, guest houses, pubs and restaurants, which are the heart of our tourist industry in Whitby.
“Already, Whitby has welcomed large volumes of visitors and we are expecting even more. We look forward to regaining some normality with the help of people enjoying a 2020 ‘staycation’.
“Unfortunately, some are not behaving responsibly. This has made national headlines in Bournemouth, but it seems to be happening in destinations all over the country, including Whitby. When some people urinate in public, despite the toilets being open; when there’s disorder and mess and rubbish is discarded without a care, it causes worry and distress to residents, to careful visitors and to the authorities. Also, obviously, it causes a dangerous situation regarding spreading the Covid-19 virus.
“Scarborough Borough Council has taken a lead in making our streets ‘Covid secure’, with signs, one-way pedestrian flows, hand sanitizer and public advice. We all need to follow that advice and take care of each other.
“We welcome visitors to Whitby and want you to enjoy our beautiful town and keep safe. Please maintain social distancing at 1m+ and maintain hand hygiene. Enjoy yourselves, in the knowledge we are keeping each other safe.
“Whitby is a unique and beautiful place to visit we want everyone to have the best experience and enjoy their stay.”
Cllr Linda Wild, Town Mayor of Whitby
