With darker nights creeping in we will be starting our autumn/ winter opening hours.
From 5th October we will be closed Mondays and Tuesdays back open with drinks & pub snack at 3pm on Wednesdays with food served from 5pm. Our same operating hours for the rest of the week.

Spooky season is creeping closer… and one of Whitby’s most atmospheric Halloween events is returning this October. 🎃👻

Illuminated Whitby Abbey will take over the ruins from Friday 23 to Saturday 31 October 2026, transforming the East Cliff landmark after dark with dramatic lighting, eerie colours and a suitably Gothic Halloween atmosphere.

As night falls, visitors will be able to wander through the illuminated ruins, with the Abbey’s towering arches and crumbling stonework creating one of the most striking sights of the season.

And this year, Dracula will be part of the experience too. 🧛

Brand-new interactive family performances inspired by Bram Stoker’s famous story will bring an extra touch of darkness to the event, in the very town that helped inspire the legendary vampire novel.

There’ll also be food and drink available on site, plenty of opportunities for haunting photographs, and the rare chance to explore Whitby Abbey after dark.

With the Abbey glowing above the town, Dracula lurking in the shadows and Halloween drawing closer, this is set to be one of Whitby’s biggest spooky season highlights.

Tickets are now available to book through the English Heritage website. Walk-up tickets will also be available on the day, but booking in advance is recommended if you want to secure your preferred date for this popular Halloween event.

Robin Hood’s Bay has a beautiful seaside charm today, but centuries ago these narrow streets had a darker reputation. 🌙🏴‍☠️

During the 18th century, Robin Hood’s Bay became one of the busiest smuggling spots on this stretch of the Yorkshire coast. Its isolated position, steep ravine, and maze of tiny alleyways made it ideal to bring contraband ashore under cover of darkness.

Tea, to***co, spirits, and other valuable goods were landed from boats before being hurried through the village. Beneath many old cottages were cellars, hiding places, and passageways that helped smugglers move goods out of sight of the authorities.

One of the most famous Robin Hood’s Bay legends claims contraband could be passed from house to house, from the shoreline to the top of the village, without ever appearing openly in the street.

It wasn’t just a handful of mysterious outsiders involved. Smuggling became deeply woven into village life, with local hiding places, escape routes, and generations of stories about those who tried to outwit the Excise men.

Walking through Robin Hood’s Bay today, it’s easy to imagine how different it felt after dark more than 200 years ago. Boats quietly arrived on the shore, barrels and sacks were carried up wet cobbled passages, doors opened briefly in the darkness, and contraband disappeared into hidden cellars.

The smugglers may be long gone, but their stories remain part of what makes this little North Yorkshire village so fascinating.
