Robin Hood’s Bay reveals plans for a new Victorian Weekend in 2026. 🎄✨🎩

Last year, it looked as though one of Robin Hood’s Bay’s best-loved Christmas traditions had come to an end.

After more than 30 years, the organisers of the original Victorian Weekend announced December 2025 would be the final event, ending a festive tradition part of village life since 1994.

But Victorian Christmas in Bay isn’t disappearing quite so easily…

This December, The New Victorian Weekend will take place on 5th–6th December 2026, kicking off a brand-new series of celebrations as part of the Robin Hood’s Bay Advent Festival. 🎄

And it won’t be the only festive weekend to look forward to:

✨ 5th–6th December – The New Victorian Weekend
🏴‍☠️ 12th–13th December – Pirates & Smugglers Weekend
🎅 19th–20th December – Family Weekend

Plans are still coming together, but visitors can expect a festive mix of live music, Christmas carols, entertainment, market stalls, displays, and the return of the famous biscuit dunking competition.

For the New Victorian Weekend, traditional dress is strongly encouraged too, with the hope of once again filling the Bay’s cobbled streets, alleyways and historic buildings with Victorian characters and a little Christmas nostalgia.

It might be a new event with a new name, but it’s lovely to know that Victorian Christmas spirit will be returning to Robin Hood’s Bay in 2026. ❤️🎩🎄

The incredible Whitby lifeboat rescue that crossed the moors through deep snow 🌊❄️

One of the most remarkable rescues in Whitby’s lifeboat history took place on 19th January 1881, when a fierce winter storm left six men stranded off Robin Hood’s Bay.

The Whitby brig Visitor was wrecked in the bay, forcing its six-man crew to abandon ship and take to a small boat. Heavy seas made a rescue from Whitby extremely difficult, so an extraordinary plan was put into action.

The Whitby lifeboat Robert Whitworth was hauled six miles overland from Whitby to Robin Hood’s Bay through snowdrifts up to seven feet deep.

About 200 men and 18 horses cleared the route and pulled the lifeboat across the snow-covered countryside.

Reaching Robin Hood’s Bay was only the beginning.

The lifeboat crew battled enormous seas to reach the stranded sailors. Their first launch ended with several broken oars, but they tried again.

On the second attempt, local man John Skelton, who knew the dangerous waters of the bay, helped guide the lifeboat through the surf.

After a gruelling battle with the sea, all six members of the Visitor’s crew were rescued and brought safely ashore.

The rescue came just days after another devastating shipwreck off Whitby. It remains an extraordinary example of courage, determination, and two coastal communities coming together when lives were at risk.
