Whitby is set for a weekend full of sea songs, seafood, family activities, and coastal heritage as two maritime-themed festivals return on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 May.

The Whitby Fish and Ships Festival will take over Whitby Marina Front car park from 10am to 5pm across both days, with the music marquee continuing until 11pm on Saturday. Expect cooking and fish craft demonstrations, live music, creative workshops, storytelling, local stallholders, street entertainment, Fisherman Olympics, RNLI lifeboat tours, and plenty for families to enjoy.

Meanwhile, the Whitby Maritime and Shanty Festival will bring traditional sea music to venues including Pannett Gallery and the Captain Cook Memorial Museum. Visitors can enjoy performances from a brilliant line-up of shanty singers, folk choirs, local musicians, and maritime performers throughout the weekend, with free entry to the programme at Pannett Gallery.

Whether you’re planning a family day out, fancy soaking up Whitby’s fishing heritage, or just love the sound of sea shanties by the coast, this weekend is a great time to head to the seaside.

WELCOME TO THE SPRING GOTHIC GATHERING IN WHITBY

23rd to 26th April
At Whitby Pavilion, Whitby Leisure Centre and venues across the town

The Gothic Gathering at Whitby Pavilion Spring 2026 is a weekend celebrating gothic atmosphere, alternative creativity and dark aesthetics in one of the most dramatic seaside towns in the country.

Across the weekend you’ll find a mix of events including:

Art, Music, and Literature
Theatre
Shopping at The Alternative Market Downstairs at Whitby Pavilion and The Haunted Emporium @ Whitby Leisure Centre
Graveyard Social with Luxury Stranger
Baby Bats Ball [ages 13+]
Vampire Victorium Masquerade Ball - with The Nosferatu
A RPG Games Day and much, much more...

Some events take place at Whitby Pavilion, while others happen in venues around the town, encouraging visitors to explore Whitby and discover its independent shops, cafés and historic streets.

You don’t have to be a Goth to enjoy the weekend. If you love the gothic aesthetic, dramatic fashion, dark stories or alternative culture, you’ll be more than welcome!

One of the lovely things about the April weekend is that Whitby tends to be a little calmer, making it easier to explore the eateries, wander the Old Town and actually enjoy the atmosphere.

New this year we’re also introducing a Whitby Gothic Town Trail, inviting visitors to explore the town and solve a small mystery along the way. [more details to follow soon]

This event is organised by a small team of traders and creatives who wanted to keep the traditional April gothic weekend alive in Whitby.

More details about individual events will be shared over the coming weeks.

The Whitby Fish and Ships Festival is just one month away! 🐟⚓🌊❤️

Whitby Fish and Ships is a lively celebration of Whitby’s rich fishing heritage, with cookery demonstrations and fish craft tips from top local chefs, incredible live music from local bands and sea balladeers, family activities and entertainment, free craft sessions, local exhibitors and so much more!

Join us at Whitby Marina Front Car Park on Saturday, 16 May, and Sunday, 17 May, from 10am to 4pm. On Saturday, the music marquee will stay open until 11pm. Everyone is welcome, and admission is free.
