Take the train to the Yorkshire coast ❤️

Getting to the North York Moors & Whitby by rail. 🚆🌿

Planning a trip to Whitby or the North York Moors? Many visitors arrive by car, coach, or bus, but travelling by rail is a relaxed and scenic alternative.

From York, you can take a regular train to Scarborough, then continue across the Moors to Whitby by bus. This journey takes about 1 hour and 5 minutes, with services running every 35 minutes. Taxis are also available from Scarborough station at the taxi rank. The journey to Whitby takes about 35 minutes by taxi and costs around £45-£50, but please ask ahead as prices may change.

Another beautiful option is the Esk Valley Railway, running from Middlesbrough to Whitby through the heart of the North York Moors National Park. Serving 17 stations along the way, it links rural villages with Middlesbrough and the historic seaside town of Whitby.

It’s a stress-free, more environmentally friendly way to travel and a lovely way to enjoy the landscapes, villages, and views before you arrive.

Captain Cook’s Monument on Easby Moor, with Roseberry Topping keeping watch in the distance.

Built in 1827, the monument honours Captain James Cook, who grew up nearby at Great Ayton before going on to become one of the most famous navigators of his age. The spot is no accident either - high above the Cleveland landscape, with views stretching across the moors, coast and Teesside.

Did you know? Cook attended school in Great Ayton, and the village still has strong links to his early life, including the Captain Cook Schoolroom Museum.

Northern Perspectives capturing the landmarks, odd corners and big views that make the North feel like home.

Polite notice- we only allow service dogs.

There has been some recent confusion on if we allow dogs in the restaurant, thanks to Google’s very helpful (not) Ai response deciding that we do.

Unfortunately we can only allow service dogs, and our resident border collie Stevie (pictured) who has had to come to work with us following an accident, in the restaurant.

Sadly we are too small and busy to offer a safe environment for dogs. We wish we could as we do mostly prefer them to humans. 🙈😉

If you need your Moutrey’s fix but can’t leave your dog, we can offer takeaways for collection (dependant on how busy we are with customers in the restaurant), and are happy for your pooch to come to the door to collect with you.

Thank you for understanding, and please don’t trust Ai as a reputable source of information!
